Steelhead Getting Fickle
By MAUDE ZIEGLER
Applegate Valley A poll
of Sunday steelhead fisher
men from Little Applegate to
the Riverview market reveal
ed little luck and much dis
appointment, according to a
roaming angler who made the
rounds.
However, fish were biting
some on eggs. A slight rise In
the water since last week was
blamed for the lack of suc
cess.
Some good reports came
through last week from the
lower Applegate area, where
-Al and Bill Bird, proprietors
of the market there, are re
ported to have been success
ful. It also was learned that
five steelhead were caught in
one morning in that area.
Among the few lucky fisher
men Sunday were Jim Fletch
er of Medford and his neph
ew, Johnny Straube.
Other dairy people attend-
irg from here were Mr. and
Mrs. Jack O'Brien, Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Romsey and Mr. and
Mrs. Glenn Smith.
Mrs. Robert Webb returned
Sunday from Palo Alto,
where she accompanied her
, husband on a Mercy Flights
trip a week ago. Webb is suf
fering from a heart condition,
and will remain in Palo Alto
for three weeks for treatment

Rural Reflections: While
other folks are writing bird
columns and entertaining
flocks in their back yards, it
is two gay little pine squirrels
that have captured the atten
tion of Dana and Curt Gear-
hardt. The little pets have
eaten their way through three
boxes of apples this winter.
The sauirrels sit on the
back porch and carefully peel
their apples before eating
them, and often take them in
to the trees to have their
meal. Sometimes they leave
their apple setting on a limb,
and bv some mysterious meth
od of balance no winds dis
turb them.
At the ooDosite end of the
yard two gray squirrels (from
a former herd of 17) have a
playground, but they are said
to scatter when the pine
squirrels come visiting.
Five Elderly Men
Die in Iowa Fire
Des Moines, Iowa (IP) At
least five elderly men were
killed Monday when fire

About 14 or 15 other men

others fled to, safety, firemen
said.
The fire broke out in a
first floor cafe and quickly
spread through the two upper
stories of the brick building
housing the walkup Olympia
hotel.
The interior of the building
was entirely burned out and
firemen described it as a
"total loss."
CLEAN SWEEP
Ontario, Ore. (IP! Mrs. Ha
zel Pulle, reported to state po
lice that thieves not only

also harvested her fruit crop,
took all electrical wiring on
the place, helped themselves
to a load of lumber, stole elec
trical equipment from the
granary and removed win
dows and window-frames from
the house.
