The Corps last summer, built an artificial salmon spawning pool downstream of chinook salmon. The hope is that instead of having spawn ing salmon and resulting fing erlings make their way past dams, they can be made to spawn and hatch in grounds that would be provided down stream of the dams. Proves Successful The first phase has proved successful. The salmon have paired off and laid their eggs. If they do, and if the four- year cycle is completed by the new salmon returning to spawn in the artificial chan nel, then the possibility of excluding provisions for pas sage of fish in future dami could be considered. The artificial pool essenti ally is a 20-foot wide chan nel divided into three inde pendent 300-yard long strech- es of water separated by screening devices. The three sections contain the same bot tom conditions such as would be found in various stretches of the upper Columbia and lower Snake rivers. There already is some evi dence that the artificial spawning grounds will be a success. A large recreational swimming area created by the Oregon State Park board, has been sought out and used for spawning by stray Chin ook. And this Fall, the four year cycle was completed by returnings almon. However, "strays" will tend to explore. It will take the controlled ex periment now under way to make a firm statement about artificial spawning grounds.
