France's dealers are sell ing three, Britain is produc ing three, and Sweden and Spain one each. East Ger many and Switzerland also hsve single contenders in the automobile "matchbox mar ket." More than half of these Eu ropean entries have two stroke engines, which make a put-putting sound like an outboard motorboat that might annoy buyers except that the two-strokes use less gasoline in a month than some of America's high-powered autos eat up in a week. Six models have one-cylinder engines. Nine have two cylinders, one has three and five have four. Bodies in most cases are so small that a driver unac customed to them has to learn how to pack himself behind the wheel. But several manu facturers have gotten around that problem by adapting the technique of North American wrap-around windshields to the overall body design. As a result, it's a common sight to see a motorist turn a handle, and walk out.- In some cases, even the steering wheel is fixed so it moves away with the front part of the body. According to the manufac turers, psychological appeal to the man who worries about a big car breaking down also is a money-making gimmick. They explain that few motor ists are sufficiently sure of themselves to tackle a repair job on a car with six or eight cylinders. But it doesn't seem so much of a problem fixing a pint-sized engine little larg er than that of a motorbike. And it's less expensive. Elevator in Bus Aids Handicapped San Lorenza, Calif. (IP) The San Lorenzo School Dist rict has placed in operation a specially equipped bus be lieved to be unique in school transportation. It has an ele vator. School officials said the $14,000 bus was the brain child of driver Tommy Stokes. It is used to carry crippled children from sev eral Alameda County commu nities to San Lorenzo's Handi capped school. Stokes said he got the idea for the elevator after having to lift the handicapped chil dren in and out of the bus. Unique features of the lift include a safety gate to pro tect the children's feet while it is in motion. The battery operated elevator is entirely enclosed within the bus. The vehicle is equipped with floor attachments to which wheel chairs may be anchored. It has individual seat belts for each child. 1 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEIf String Collector Has Huge Ball Pittsburgh HP) Give Mar tin Beck enough string and he'll ask for more. For Beck, a clerk with a Pittsburgh gas company, has 630 pounds of the stuff. His ball of string measures seven feet, 10 inches across. Beck doesn't know whether he's the champion string col lector or not, but he'll chal lenge anyone who says he isn't. He started saving cord in 1938 when he saw an item about a man and his son who had been saving string for 40 years and had collected 230 pounds. Beck moved Into his pres ent home last year and he had to take the frame off the back door to get the ball inside. Four husky movers were needed to arry the ball of cord into the house. Beck's rarest cord came from a fello v in Alaska. The string was treated with oil from Iceland, to give it strength, and a coat of wax made in Sicily, Beck said. Beck has no intention of giving up his string collecting. But since moving last year he has had some .misgivings about the sphere. "If I ever move again," he said, "I'll have to knock out the walls to get the ball out." Amherst Receives Neutron Source Amherst, Mass. (IP) Am herst college is the first col lege in the country to receive a plutonium-beryllium neu tron source, a small device re stricted until recently to clas sified atomic research. The vest-pocket "cyclotron" is being loaned the college by the Atomic Energy Commis sion and will be used exclu sively for teaching radion chemistry by Amherst's chem istry department. The device is not more than two inches long and is consid ered extremely safe for han dling by students. It emits only neutrons and not the more dangerous gamma rays which are difficult to shield. It can be used to bombard ele ments with nutrons and can render more than a third of the earth's elements radio active. The new neutron source is the second radioactive device loaned Amherst by the AEC. The other is a cobalt source used for biological research.
