Doc Quigg Faces Tax Troubles With Failure To Get Reports Documented By DOC QUIGG United Press Correspondent New York W A business form manufacturer has been shuffling figures around in his electronic brain machine and has come up with an idea of the national expense-account stockpile for 1958. If everybody complies with the Internal Revenue ruling and keeps a duplicate of his expense accounts for income tax purposes and if you figure that on the average expense accounts are filled out every two weeks, he says the lump ed results at year.'s end would be: A stack of paper 15 miles high, a 40,000-mile-long strip of carbon paper, and a small mountain of paper clips. The statistician, W. J. Such- ors, sales manager of Uarco, Inc., says that if only 8,000, 000 of our 17,000,000 profes sional, technical, sales work ers or proprietors keep dup licates, tne extra copies run ning to 200,000,000 would fill 40,000 file drawers. Must Support Claims "Nex year, you know, you'll have to report all reimbursed expenses and be prepared to support your claims," he says It's that "be prepared to support your claims" that gets me. I don't know exactly how I'm going to to do it. I've been trying to get docu mentation of my flagrant spending, but it's hard. My reimbursed expenses are practically all for travel, and my traveling is done by bus and subway in New York. They charge 15 cents a ride. It normally takes two fares going some place and two fares returning. He took a quick look at it Bright Stars Represent Pollux, Castor By FAY BENTLEY "And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had win tered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux." Thus did Paul in Acts 28:11, refer to an ancient Greek and Roman- custom of carrying on some of their ships, figure heads, representing the Great Twin Brethren. According to legend, Castor and Pollux were twin brothers, sons of the king and queen of Sparta. These boys who loved each other dearly were always together. Al though both excelled in athletics, Castor was noted for his splendid horsemanship and Pollux was especially skilled in boxing and running. On Expedition One night on shipboard, while the Twins were serving as members of Jason's ex pedition in search of the Golden Fleece a storm arose. Orpheus calmed the waves with the wonderful music of his lyre. When the storm sub sided the argonauts were fill ed with wonder to see a star hovering above the head of each one of the young men. After this Castor and Pol lux were regarded as the pa trons of sailors and many ships from Greece and Rome carried figureheads represent ing the Twins. These two youths rode around the world on gleam ing white horses going from one adventure to another. People liked to see them as they felt that the sight of the Twins meant success in battle or whatever activity they were undertaking. Though still young they had become famous and people re garded them, as gods. Finally Castor was killed in battle. At the birth of the Twins, Jupiter had given the gift of immortality to Pollux, but Castor was mortal. The grief of Pollux over the death of his brother was inconsolable. He prayed to Jupiter asking him to either make, him a mortal or to immortalize his brother, Castor. Set Brothers in Sky Jupiter finally set both brothers in the sky where they could be together throughout eternity. And there they may be seen as the two brightest stars in the constellation, Gemini the Twins. During the last two weeks of January, about 8 p.m., the Twins will be almost due east, about half-way between the horizon and the overhead ID LOS .-eft-" " ' " .""'"''"""i and handed it back. "Look, Bud," he said with a wild look in his eye, "Willya please do like I said and move back in the bus. I got work to do." "How about signing this, just to help me," I said. "See duh bus company, Bud," he said. "All complaints goes to the company. You got a grievance you take it up with them. Leave me outta this. My job is to drive this bus up and down this street". A similar stone wall was encountered in the subway. When I handed my form to to the man who opens and closes the doors, he eyed me coldly: "I ain't signing nothing. You guys ain't hooking me on no deals." Well, what are you going to do? My expenses are mounting daily and I can't get 'em documented. in Twins point. Earlier in the evening this star group will be nearer the horizon and as the night progresses the Twins travel across the heavens towards the western horizon. Look for two bright stars, one above the other. The ap parent distance separating them is slightly less than the distance between the Point ers in the Big Dipper. Castor and Pollux, the two stars mentioned above, form the heads of the Twins, who seem to resemble stick figures. They are lying with their feet in the Milky Way, to ward Orion. The feet and arms are represented by rather dim stars. Stars Outline Foot Two stars outline each foot. Castor who is higher in the sky than his brother has one star in his arm while the arm of Pollux contains two stars, and is slightly bent at the elbow. When ascending the east ern sky their heads seem to be lower than their feet. But while traveling down the "hills of heaven" towards the western horizon they are in a standing position. , Some people see in this rectangular constellation the top of an upright piano. To the naked eye Castor ap pears as one star. The tele scope reveals three stars and the spectroscope proves that each of these three stars has a companion, making six stars in all. Castor is a part of one of the most interesting multiple star systems in the heavents. Pollux is a naviga tional star. Sales Tax Tops Revenues in 1957 Chicago OP) Sales tax collections outdistanced all other sources of tax revenue in 27 states during fiscal 1957. Commerce Clearing House, national reporting authority on tax and business law, said the sales tax replaced gaso line taxes as the principal source of revenue in three more states during the per iod. These states were Arkan sas, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Income taxes also rose in favor as the major revenue producer in 12 states, an in crease of two over last year. Idaho and Kentucky, previ ously dependent on the gas oline tax, found more of their 1957 revenue came from in come taxes than from any other single source. ' 3263 57 Delivered in Medford 415 S.
