Rickover Favored As Czar of Program To Build Space Ships Washington TP) Congress was told Thursday that Adm. Haymann G. Rickover, "fa ther" of the atomic submarine should be named czar of a crash program to develop a space ship. Rep. Chet Holifield (D. Calif.) unofficially nominated Rickover for the post in a HOW CHRISTIAN SCIENCE HEALS Station KWIN 1400 K.C. Sundays 10:15 A.M. speech demanding that the U.S. act now to gain control of outer space and the area under the oceans. He charged that U. S. policy now is one of "follow the leader" and that the Defense Department has "no new and imaginative program. . .too much complacency . . a stand pat philosophy." Asks Major Effort In a speech prepared for delivery to the House, Holi field called for a "major" ef fort to develop a space ship coupled with a stepped-up program to build nuclear sub marines which can fire long range missiles from under water. If this country fails to "con trol and master" both outer space and the underseas, he said, "we will default from world leadership and become a second class power." He said that Rickover, "the driving force" behind develop ment of the world's first nu clear - powered submarine, should be placed in charge of a space ship project compar able to the Manhattan Project which produced the first atomic bomb. "He is the type of man that could produce results," Holi field said. Holifield said the U.S. is "clearly" ahead of Russia in the nuclear submarine field but both the "numbers and quality" of the U. S. subs should be beefed up at once. Washington OP) Deputy Defense Secretary Donald A. Quarles said Thursday the Pentagon is working on "a lot" of "new and imaginative" programs for the space age. "We are going into the space age. Salem Man Killed In Two-Car Crash Rickreall, Ore. IP) Donald Harlen Bennett, 21, Salem, was killed Thursday night in a two-car collision a half mile west of here on Oregon Highway 223, State Police reported. Daniel Block, 27, Dallas. Ore., was hospitalized at Dallas with a broken knee cap, lacerations and a pos sible broken lower jaw. The accident occurred dur ing a rainstorm. State Police said Bennett was a member of the Navy stationed at the Bangor, Wash., ammunition depot. "We are going into the space business," Quarles said. Sunday, January 19, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE PT&T Employees Attend Classes Sixty Pacific Telephone employees from Medford and Ashland attended a day-long class last week at Medford dealing with the philosophy of defensive driving. The instruction is being given over a four-day period by Harold Wheeler, chief line assigner for the company from Eugene. Started as an expansion of the company's safe driving program, the training will be given 2,200 Pacific Telephone employees in Oregon. According to Manager Jack Creager, 10 instructors are engaged in teaching the course which covers driver attitudes and the psychology of the motor vehicle driver. Developed by safety ex perts of the telephone com pany's plant department in Oregon, the course is based on evidence that 95 per cent of all motor vehicle accidents are caused primarily by the improper attitude of drivers. VOLCANO THREAT EASING Catania, Sicily (IP) The Mount Etna volcano, which erupted New Year's Day, ap peared to be settling down again today.
