PHONE WEbster 3-8541 O'Brien, western regional director for the Foreign Policy association, declared the U.S. faces "unparallelled danger" in the present international situation. He urged Ameri cans to join in the informal study of foreign policy which Great Decisions provides.' Nulling Elected Director of Firm B. L. (Bud) Nutting, gen eral manager of Medford cor poration, was elected to the board of directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan as sociation, Medford, at a recent shareholders meeting. He was elected to fill a present vacancy on the board. Other board members include R. F. Kyle, president; Herb Grey, vice president; John Myers, secretary-treasurer; John Niedermeyer and R. F. Kyle Jr. Kyle Jr., assistant mana ger, presented the annual managers report at the meet ing. He noted that First Fed eral boosted its assets by $429,648.60, or 13 per cent, in 1957. The association now holds more savings and serves more savers than at any other time in its history. Kyle said net savings were increased by $600,038.08, or 22 per cent, bringing the total savings as of Dec. 31 to $3, 297,820.53. Home mortgage loans increased by $310, 643.12, a 10 per cent increase last year, bringing the total loans outstanding to $3,166, 652.98, Kyle said. Reserves were increased to $250,221.57 and now exceed reserves on hand, he added. Public Attitudes Public attitudes and re sponse determine U. S. foreign policy, according to O'Brien, and hysteria and a lack of understanding result in rash moves. The eight topics to be dis cussed in the nationwide Great Decisions program, which begins Feb. 2, were presented. They deal with Russia, secur ity, United Europe, the Mid dle East, Africa. U. S. eco nomic policy, trade with Red China and the United Nations. Information provided in fact sheets prepared for the program forms the basis for the informal home discus sions. They are also used by schools, churches and other groups, Jaffrey said. Fact Sheets Available All persons interested in taking part in Great Decisions . . . 1958 may purchase the fact sheets at the Medford public library for a nominal charge of $1. Jaffrey explained, that any one may form a home discus sion group which would meet once a week during1 the eight week program to discuss a particular phase of U. S. for eign policy. More than 200. persons took part in the country last year, and more than 4,000 Oregon ians studied foreign policy through Great Decisions . . . 1957. He adds: "The house armed services committee has been assured that equipment has been de veloped which will do exact ly that. It will detect a missile as it rises above the horizon and will afford a sufficient period of time TO PERMIT ELEMENTS OF UR STRA TEGIC AIR COMMAND TO BECOME AIRBORNE." rpHAT is to say: -- If Russia should launch a missile attack against us, this new equipment will give us about 20 minutes warning. That will give us time enough to get our atom bomb carry ing bombers into the air to deliver MASSIVE RETALIA TION against Russia. So If Russia IS ahead of us in missile development We will still be in a posi tion to say to her: "UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO ACCEPT DESTRUCTION YOURSELVES, don't attack US with missiles." 2 Stands, Dresser Bed Chest ROOM SET THE warning, of course, will be brief. So It will be necessary to act quickly if and when the warn ing is given. In order to make that possible, plans are under way to DISPERSE strategic air command bases. Mr. Vin son says SAC bombers will soon be dispersed at 33 dif ferent bases, with not more than one squadron of 15 planes at each base. The idea of that is to make it difficult for Russia to launch missiles enough to de stroy all of our long-range bombers at one fell blow. Our purpose will be to get enough of our bombers into the air to smash Russia with H-bombs. It still has to be perfected and built. The answer to that is that Russia hasn't got accurate in tercontinental missiles yet. She still has to perfect them and build them in sufficient numbers. THIS is the point: The Russians are smart. Let's concede that. BUT WE'RE SMART TOO in spite of all the bear talk that is being spread by the politi cal peddlers of gloom . and doom. Let's not lose our nerve. Let's not crawl in a hole and pull the hole in after us. That isn't the American way. 123 S. FRONT O I8!?!! nrai Phone SP 2-7121 Walla Walla (IP) Dr. John E.
