1 Bright Forecast Given on Jerseys A bright future is depicted for the Jersey cow, according to Rosel H. Hunter, western fieldman for the American Jersey Cattle club. Hunter outlined the evolu tion of the all-Jersey milk programs for the 23 members and guests present at a recent meeting of the Rogue River Jersey Cattle club at the Dardanelle. Marlin Fox, program man ager in Oregon, continued the story by pointing out the rapid expansion of the All Jersey since being taken over by the national club last year. Twenty-eight states now carry the All-Jersey franchise. J. E. Parsons, president of the local Jersey club, outlined a work program for the com ing year and named his com mittee chairmen. Carolyn Tiegs, the Jersey princess, and her mother were introduced. Carolyn spoke briefly on her recent trip to Chicago to attend the Nation al 4-H Club Congress. Guests Dresent were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hopewell and Bill Gilman of Eagle Point, Mrs. L. S. Tiegs and daughter, Carolyn, Talent; Pete Belcas- tro and Francis Sullivan, ' Weed, Calif.; Rex Ross, breed pr and importer of Jersey Cattle, Mount Angel, Ore.; Hunter, Corvallis, Ore.; Fox, Mollala, Ore. and Earle Jos sy, Jackson county extension agent. Spraying Performs Double Duly Job Corvallis Oregon mint growers can "kill two birds with one stone" in their spring spray programs to control weeds and mint rust, report Oregon State college agricul tural experiment station re searchers. Karmex DW, the new chem ical weed killer, and dinitro limine for control of mint rust can be mixed in the same tank flor effective control of both weeds and rust, say C. E. lyorner, OSC plant patholo gist, and W. R. Furtick, agro nomist. Two to 3 pounds per acre of Karmex DW, depending on soil type, and 3 to 4V4 pounds of dinitro amine mixed with 30 gallons of water gave ex cellent control in OSC tests when applied before shoots emerged in the spring. The researchers caution agadinst applying the spray after mint emerges. Furtick said Karmex damage to mint that- virtually wiped out some plantings In central Oregon in 195f was caused by sparying after mint plants were up. Advisory Group To Hold Meeting Salam The ptoato advisory commfittee to the Oregon state deDartraent of agriculture will meet in Salem- Jan. 22 at tha sericulture building, ac cording; to plant industry chief Frank McKennon. The group will review the Oreeon potato law as recently amended to determine if it fulfills needs of the industry with respect to present-day marketing practices. Labeling of potatoes will be one of the points of interest at this meeting. There is some question among the industry as to whether potato contain ers should be tagged or if the 1 a b e 1 ing information should be printed or tenciled right on the container. Wesley McKaig, Klamath Falls, is chairman of the po tato advisory committee: Mer rill Webb, Redmond, serves as secretary.
