FOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thuriday. January 18, 1958 Re! igious Factions Split Sharply Over Test Tube Babies London W Roman Catho lics and professional anti Christiani have split sharply over the Archbishop of Can terbury'! declaration that it Is a crime for a woman to have a test tube baby. Government leaders de clined comment on Archbi shop Geoffrey Fisher's attack on artificial insemination, and spokesmen for Britain's doc tors followed suit. Most pro minent Britons also evaded the issue. May Seek Debate , Laborite members of Parli ament, however, backed up by second string Conserva- Incentive Awards Given FS Employees : Maurice Rocheleau and Arthur Mackley, engineers with the Rogue River National Forest,, have received cash awards of $10 each for a work improvement suggestion. For est Supervisor Carroll E. Brown has announced. ; The suggestion is for using rubber stamps to indicate the stationing and other features on plans and profile sheets for road design. Previously this information was placed on the sheets by hand and the use of the rubber stamps will save considerable time and effort. - Cash awards are made pos sible under a law enacted as an incentive to employees to make suggestions for in creased efficiency or better working conditions, and is available for all federal em ployees. - Rocheleau is an engineer stationed at the Union Creek Ranger station north of Pros pect, and Mackley, whose home is at Shady Cove, was working as an engineering aid at Union Creek when the sug gestion was devised. . x ' I tives, indicated that they may press for debate on Fisher's statement as a possible ground for revision of divorce laws. Fisher did not take a stand on the possible classification of artificial insemination as adultery, but he did say that it "defrauds the child unbe gotten and deceives both his putative kinsmen and society at large." A British Medical Council spokesman said "it is up to the individual doctor to take responsibility for his own ac tion" when asked to facilitate a test tube birth. The N a t i onal Marriage Guidance Council said that women unable to bear child ren naturally should adopt them. Colin McCall, secretary of the National Secular anti Christian Society, took the side of the test tube. Humans Not Cattle "The Christian idea of sin has caused a great deal of suf fering in the world," McCall said. "Where artificial insem ination has brought happiness it is a good thing." A spokesman for Britian's Catholic Social Workers re torted sharply. "Human beings are not cattle, to be bred by test tube," he said. "Only a pagan world would treat them as such. A child who never knows its father and never has its father's care faces hideous tragedy." BELATED CHRISTMAS Lake Charles. La.
