Not infrequently, the temperature may drop to 40 below. It's nothing to get excited about. He heaps up a moun tain of snow, then with his snowshoes skis work equally well he hollows out a hole in it ig enough to shelter him. Inside it, he lights a little fire. (Every skier, incidentally, should carry a waterproof match case filled with match es, and a short piece of candle for emergency use. Usually it is possible for a skier to find dry sagebrush, greasewood, or dry evergreen twigs.) This will make the inner walls of the hole melt to solid ice so that it will not cave down during the night and smother him. Then the Lapp extin guishes the fire, creeps inside, and carefully shuts the open ing. Soon his little sleeping room is so well heated by the warmth of his own body that he has to ope,n his fur coat or even take it off. Can Be Done Quickly As for building a bigger shelter like an igloo, with practice that can be done quickly, explains Dr. Wilhelm Bierhenke. One man can build a small emergency igloo with in an hour a large one may take two men an hour and a half. An organized group of boy scouts ought to throw it up in less than a half hour. How do the Eskimos do it? First you must have a heavy crust of snow. Extend your arm and draw a large circle with your ski pole. Cut out big thick slabs of snow with a shovel. Place the first slab on this circular line, with all the pieces fitting closely together and in such a way that they will slope slightly inward. is hereby given that application Leave a hole for the entrance. tramp down hard a firm plat form of snow. This is to sit and lie on. If you want to be real-igloo-ish, set a piece of clear ice in to the wall as a window to give the house light. In the roof, close to the entrance, bore a little air hole which can be closed with a bandana. To duplicate the ripe odor of Eskimo takes months of no bathing, cooking real-gone fish, saving the urine for tan ning, and burning fish oil. Even so, you'd find something missing. School Constructed In Only 50 Days Corte Madera, Calif. ftP) One of the fastest school building projects on record has been completed here with" the opening of Marin County Day School just 50 days after school trustees voted to build. The school's 140 grade school pupils moved into the new schoolhouse from tents where classes had been held since early September. Not a make-shift structure, the new school is constructed of pre-fabricated steel sec tions. It has seven classrooms, a utility room that includes a kitchen and is built on a 35 acre plot. The Marin County Day School is a private institution founded last year by 40 par ents and teachers who decided to do' something themselves about the crowded conditions of the schools in this booming residential county near San Francisco. They raised $200, 000 by various means to hire 14 teachers and build the school. r Free: By special arrange ment with the editors of the Encyclopedia Americana, my panel of judges will award each week to the reader who sends me the best true-life na ture adventure, the best na ture observation, or the best question on nature and wild life, a complete 30-volume set of this world-famous refer ence work in a handsome Seal- craft binding.
