F Our youngest boy is somewhat of a problem to us. Leon is 14 and is in the right grade in school for his age, but he is always at the very bottom of his class. Leon does his homework every day, but I can see that his mind is not on it. He just daydreams. He realizes he is not as smart as some of the others, but he doesn't make the extra effort he should make to keep up with them. I am sure he can do much better work and I try to push him on, telling him how im portant it is for him to get an education. These days a col- Jege education is everything and Leon's brother will soon be starting college. I want him to go, too, but my wife says it's no use trying. Mrs. J. F. 1 say we should just leave Leon alone as far as his schooling is concerned. He finds the work very hard and there's no sense making him feel worse than he does about it. He'll never be able to get into college in a mil lion years. He told me so the other day and he had tears in his eyes. Why should we tor ture him? My husband broods about Leon all the time, but I tell him we should be grateful we have one smart son. There's no sense expecting big things of Leon. We should be glad if he stays out of trouble and is a healthy boy. He'll earn a living, even if it isn t in a fancy occupation. Everyone, including his teachers, likes Leon very much. The Council: It is not a good idea to hold up an ex cessively high goal to any adolescent and if Leon is now at the bottom of the class, col lege does seem to be a too high goal. It certainly does seem wrong to torture this boy by aiming at something he feels he can't possibly achieve. We disagree very much, however, with Mrs. J. F.'s idea that Leon should be just "left "alone as far as his schooling is concerned." We are sure that Leon is better in some subjects than others. He should be encour aged to develop these strong points. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. should enlist the aid of Leon's teachers to help him excell in some way. Success will do a great deal for his personality and his potential mental abil ity Just because Leon may not be college material is no rea son to believe he does not need help in planning his fu ture. His parents should give a good deal of thought to this matter. Mrs. J. F. seems to take the attitude that the main ques tion involved is whether or not the parents should be willing to accept the ego blow of having a boy who is not too bright. The real question is how can the parents help Leon to live and work up to his fullest potentiality. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.) Gibberellic Acid Hastens Growth Davis, Calif. (IPI A Uni versity of California professor says tomato seeds grow at high speed if they are "souped up" with gibberellic acli. James F. Harrington, asso ciate professor at the Davis campus, noted faster seed growth is of major importance to growers who direct-seed in the field instead of transplant ing seedlings. There will then be less chance that rain will crust the soil before the plants get started and the plants will have a good edge in the race with weeds. Harrington's gibberellic acid studies show growth was speeded up 15 per cent by soaking seeds in a solution containing 10 parts per mil lion of gibberellic acid. Solu tions containing 100 parts per million speed growth 20 per cent and 1,000 parts per mil lion resulted in 25 per cent faster growth. The professor used seeds of the Pearson variety, some of them also receiving various combinations of treatments and untreated seeds were grown in soil and on blotting paper. Three different grow ing temperatures were tested to compare the results of gib- berellic-acid stimulation under varied growing conditions. Walt's TV & Radio Service Oldest Shop in So. Oregon 409 S. Some know that it is due to the Tricho monas which is a little sin gle - celled par asite. In most cases, p a rasites ur. Alvarez don t C a U S e much trouble, but in a few women, they produce much discharge and irritation. In many cases the infestation ap pears to die out by itself, and in others the woman gets re lief by taking a vinegar douche, perhaps morning and evening (adding perhaps a ta blespoonful of vinegar to a bag of warm water). In other cases, the woman gets well by inserting a suppository which contains a medicine that kills the parasites. The trouble is that the parasites can hide, perhaps in the neck of the womb or in some of the glands at the entrance of the vagina or of the urethra (tube leading into the blad der). In some cases they get into the urinary bladder, and then they must be gotten out of there and the vagina at the same time. In many persistent cases the husband and wife are in festing each other back and forth. Then, obviously, there is no use treating the wife j unlefs the husband is cured. After taking large doses of a powerful antibiotic, some women used to get a distress ing infection of the vagina with a mold that was hard to get rid of. Fortunately, I haven't seen such cases lately. The National Epilepsy League Many a troubled mother of an epileptic child, living In some small isolated commun ity far from a big city, will write me asking where she can get expert help for her youngster. Her good home doctor may admit frankly that, like me, he has not had experience using the new powerful, but potentially dan gerous, drugs for epilepsy. Usually I suggest that the mother get in touch with Mr. Gray, of the National Epilep sy League, 130 N. Wells st., Chicago, 6, 111. He has a list Weighing of Mayor Amuses Rotations Hartford, Conn. (IPI Rotar ians back from their recent European trip for the interna tional convention were in trigued with the fact that in a small English town the mayor-elect is weighed before he takes office and when he leaves office. If he has lost weight, it is assumed his administration was successful.
