It is a good thing that they didn't take me up on it, be cause I would have lost. I don't know enough about cancer to be giving advice. And I don't go sounding off unless I know what I'm talk ing about. But I will say that every one who has cancer, or thinks they have it, should not give up hope. And, they should have regular medical examin ations. Dr. Alton Ochsner (of New Orleans, La.) whom I con sider one of the foremost can cer specialists in the United States, advises against smok ing cigarettes. In fact, he thinks it does a lot of harm. Still Smoking Pipe He told me to stop smok ing cigarettes, and did not fully stop. I'm still smoking my pipe.' He has seen me smoking it and hasn't said anything. Personally, I haven't got the slightest idea if smoking brings on cancer. It may con tribute to it, but as far as I know there's no conclusive proof. "I've been smoking both cigarettes and a pipe for years and I thought I'd be the last one in the world to have can cer. In the summer of 1956, my wife, Anna, myself and our two girls drove from' Monroe, La., to Canada. It was a long, 6,500 mile trip and we took turns driving. I didn't feel too good on part of it. When we returned to Mon roe I had some stomach trou ble and was coughing more than usual. But I've had bronchitis for years and didn't pay too much attention to the cough ing. . Cancer Spotted I was in Washington on business in August, 1956, and dropped into Walter Reed Army Hospital for my an nual physical check up. The doctors, using an X-ray, found a small spot on the up per part of my left lung. I laughed when they said it might be malignant. The doctors said they could not determine for certain un less they cut it out and ex amined it in a laboratory. But they insisted that if it was a malignant tumor, I wouln't live another year. They want ed to operate right away. It was quite an operation. It lasted about three hours. Lt. Col. William Moncrief, the chief surgeon, slit me open all the way around the left side of my chest, under my arm, from front to back. He cut out the upper lobe of my left lung. Five days later, while I was still stitched up, the results came back from the labora tory. It was a malignant tu mor, all right. It might happen only -twice a night, or as often as 12 times a night. But I've been in a lot of tough situations before and have never quit' yet. I cer tainly am not going to let this get me down.
