Oj Cb lib HWUillltu Jacksonville The holiday season in Jacksonville passed with tha usual get togethers for family dinners, the ex change of news notes from old friends, written in crowd ed fashion on the backs of Christmas cards and a great deal of contemplation about what 1938 will bring, this small but "important to us" corner of the world. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Mcln- tyre, recently married, are re siding on Tussy lane in Grants Pass. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Noble were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hoskins on Christmas day. The community extends heartfelt sympathy to City Recorder Mrs. Jean Hewlet and family at the sudden and untimely death of her hus band, Ted Hewlett. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 2, with com mittal in Memory Gardens cemetary. Relatives here for the serv ice were Mr. and Mrs. James Hewlett of Gresham, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thomas of Moro, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Mel vin Mitchell of Troutdale, Ore., Arthur Henig of Yreka, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Haan and family of Sunny vale, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. V. Haan of Clarkston, Wash. Arriving later in the week were Mrs. Hewlett's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Haan of Sherwood, N.D., who plan an Indefinite stay with their daughter and ganddaughter, Hollie. Members of the Medford : and Jacksonville Word Kraf-; ters club held their December ! meeting at the home of Mrs. Alvin Minshall. Current con tests were discussed and re-, freshments served. There were eight members present. , Mr. and Mrs. Howard God ley of North Bend, Ore., were guests over the Christmas holi days at the home of Godley s mother, Mrs. Bernice Janosky. The Godley's reported that their son, Ronald, and his wife of Ft. Ord, Calif., had their first child, named June, Dec. 10. Her birth makes Mrs. Janosky a great-grandmother. SAYS oo In last week's column Mrs. Hugh Martin's name was in advertently ommitted from the list of surviving relatives of her husband, Hugh Martin, for whom funeral services were recently held at Camp White. Mrs. Martin lives on Fourth st. in Jacksonville. - Mr. and Mrs. Harld S. Stay ton of San Diego have an nounced the birth of a five pound 15 ounce boy, born on Dec. 24. Mrs. Stayton is the former Lorraine S t a r k e y, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Le roy Starkey, former residents here. Mrs. Bernice Pennick of Medford spent Christmas Day with Mrs. Ida Wright in Jack- . sonville. Mr. and Mrs. Ford Patter son and family spent the holi day season in Encitnita, Calif., visiting relatives, including the Robert Patterson family and the George Mayfields, former residents here. Miss Joan Fretwell spent the holiday vacation with her mother, Mrs. Lois Fretwell. Miss Fretwell is a freshman at the Williamette university In Salem. t The Monday evening before Christmas, a group of Jackson ville girls revived the old-time custom of carol singing from door to door, g'ving many residents a surprise Christmas treat. The girls were Nancy Niedermeyer, Rita McBeth, Evelyn Niedermeyer, Toni Tweedy, Clara Anderson,' Alice Crowley. E. O. Graham, Institutional representative of Cub Scout Pack 35 in Jacksonville, has announced that reorganization of the pack is well underway and that their charter has been sent for. Ed Hinkle will serve as Cub Scout Master and Woodrow Davis as assist ant master. Arthur Roberts is committee chairman with the Rev. W. D. Doctors said Gershwin has been in a serious condition j since undergoing an opera- j tion last Dec. 24 for what was i described as "eansrenous at-! pendicitis." He was reported as in fairly good condition after being treated by a team of specialists for his latest at tack Thursday night. Christmas party guests at the Arthur Roberts home were Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Winkleman and daughter, Cel este, of Ashland, former New Jersey residents. Home for the holiday season from the Great 'jakes Naval Training Center was Richard Stanford, who returned to his base this week. Guests at the Elmar Adams home over Christmas were their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Vance Adams of Tule lake, Calif. Dinner guests at the Adams' home Christmas day included Mr. and Mrs. Carl Totman and children and Marvin Maxwell of Jacksonville. Sputnik Spotting Camera Designed London (IP) Soviet scien tists have designed a special Sputnik-spotting camera with fast lenses able to photograph vast areas of the night sky, Moscow Radio said Saturday. It said scientists at the Odessa Observatory built four and that one already had been installed in Odessa. It said the scientists used the camera to take a picture of the second Sputnik. The broadcast said the camera takes rapid pictures with special shutters and en abled scientists to determine accurately the Sputnik's po sition at any given time.
