Annual Party
Given Sunday
By Colony Club
An event of last Sunday,
r December 29, was the annual
New Year party of the Col-
i ony club. Cocktails and lun
cheon were served, beginning
at 1 o'clock. Mrs. Marjorie
i Pitts, president of the club,
! was assisted for the party by
Mrs. Lillian Salade, social
i chairman, and Mr. and Mrs.
I Frank Preston.
About 75 members and
guests attended.
Colony club is one of the
i older organizations for wo
men of the valley, having
been formed in 1911. It was
organized as a convenience
i of women who lived on ran
ches and orchards at a dis
tance from town and who
i were in need of a headquart
ers or club rooms in Med
ford. Headquarters were first
in the Medford hotel; later
an apartment in Cargill court
was used and then the resi
dence on Geneva street was
purchased which the group
still uses.
With the improvement of
personal transportation, the
club members found that the
original purpose was less im
portant.. The club, small in
membership, had always had
a program of charitable work
throughout the years the
members have met once each
week to sew for the Red
Cross or other agencies. The
club was one of the early
supporters of the Jackson
County Public Health associ
ation, and has aided 'other
civic projects. The clubhouse
is used for parties given by
the club as a whole, or by
individual members.
The late Mrs. Edmund
Burke, mother of Mrs. Don
Clark, was the club's first
president and in some fam
ilies, third generation mem
bers now belong.
