EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGOK) MAIL TRIBUNE Thuriday, January 2, 1958 Asylum Parolee Shot To Death During Rampage Castro Valley, Calif. OP! A 43-year-old asylum parolee was shot to death by sheriff's deputies Wednesday after a two -hour rampage during which he burned down his neighbor's home, destroyed four autos and two outbuild ings by fire, and attempted to burn another neighbor's home. The man, Luis Silva, was riddled with bullets when he leaped out of a foxhole he had previously prepared in anticipation of his one-man war and charged deputies with a knife. Awakened by Shooting Authorities said the ram page began at 5 a.m. when Thess A. Peters, 39, manager of a manufactures nlant. was awakened by the sound of shooting. He looked out to see Silva firing at the Peters' home. Peters moved his wife, Lil lian, and their two children to a safe position and got his shotgun to return the fire, but Silva had moved out of range to the back of the house. Silva then smashed the glass out of Peters' three cars and pickup truck, sloshed gaso line on the vehicles and a nearby stable and carport and touched them afire. As the fire spread to Pe ters' $25,000 main home, he hustled his family to a neigh bor's for safety. Silva had disappeared by the time nine deputies ar rived on the scene, but they found him at another resi dence in the neighborhood trying to set it afire with gasoline and homemade fire bombs fashioned of bundles of matches held by rubber bands. Defied Demands When Silva saw the deputies he ran to his own cottage and defied their demands to sur render. They fired two tear - gas bombs into the building and Silva dashed out and leaped into his fox hole. As officers closed in, Silva charged Deputy Thomas Houchins with a knife, shout ing, "I won't be taken alive . . ! I'll take one of you with me." Houchins fired three shots vfrom his revolver and anoth er deputy blasted Silva twice with a shotgun at point-blank range. Officers said Silva ap parently had gone beserk be cause Peters had earlier com plained about him carrying a rifle in his yard.
