Even this long warm period eventually gave way before another age of cold weather during which snow fell again, glaciers formed, seas receded, and bitter snow-laden bliz zards tortured the recently evolved reptiles and de stroyed conifers which were now dotting the northern lands. In this frigid age even the equatorial band running through India, Africa, South America and Australia felt the heavy hand of lasting snows which congealed into glaciers and left their heavier tracks on the tortured land. This was again followed with a long period of warm weather say about 150,000 000 years ago. The chances are there was no natural ice on earth at this time. The po lar repions sustained a lush tropical life. Even the high est mountins were not high enough for glacier-breeding snow to accumulate. The seas warmed so that warm-water corals grew as far north as southern ' Alaska and the British Isles. Great Ice Age Began This warm period which brought the dinosaurs into the northern river valleys couldn't last and about 500,000 years ago the earth's last great ice age began. Snows fell and glaciers formed and began sliding down from the poles creating tre mendous refrigerated areas which bred violent weather. This last cold period lasted a mere 470,000 years bring ing us up to 30,000 years when the ice began to re treat. Behind the retreating glaciers the warmer climate stimulated the advance of spruce, pine, poplar, birch and grasses . on their north ward migration. Where do we stand today regarding an ice age? Scien tists say betwixt and be tween.
