I I ADMITTING slaying of his mother because she rebuked him for talking overlong on telephone, John Jessup, 17, is held by police in Brook lyn, N. Y. (International) Cost of Living Due To Continue Higher in 1958 Washington (W Will the cost of living continue to climb in 1958? The answer to that ques tion s a qualified "yes" by informed economists in the nation's capital. Many of these experts told i the United Press that retail prices probably will go up in the New Year. They were con fident, howev;r, the increase would be in the neighbor hood of 1 to IVi per cent against a 3 per cent rise in 1957. On top-level government official, whose job is study ing prices, predicted that for at least the first half - of the year the consumer '.price index will hold ap- proximately steady. Continued Rise Seen Many experts maintain the cost of goods and services consumers buy will continue upward even with the econ omy going through a readjust : ment or sidewise movement. Since the consumer price index is only an average it doesn't show that the cost of some items has risen much less in the last 10 years than others. Clothing, for example rose only 6V4 per cent over j the 1947-49 average while transportation is up nearly 36 per cent. Food is up 16 per cent. The index as a i whole is up 21 per cent. j Different prices will show divergent movements in 1958 with productivity output per man hour having a major influence. Since World War .II productivity has in creased at an annual rate of nearly 3V4 per cent with the gain greatest in some manu facturing lines and smallest among service industries. .That is a major reason, ec onomists say, why the price j of services medical care, transit fares, haircuts, enter tainment, etc. has gone up more than the cost of most commodities. "rHigher costs both for labor and materials have not been fully offset by great er productivity. Prices were raised to cover the differ ence. - In 1957 productivity in i creased only l1, per cent about half the post-war aver age. No reason has been ad vanced for the slowdown but the experts note it is unrea sonable to expect a perfectly even rate of improvement. What happens to produc tivity in 1958 will be a ma :jor factor in the price trend. The trend in indust ry is expected to be to ward greater efficiency to keep prices in line for com petitive reasons. .The extent of the business readjustment is expected to influence price trends. If the adjustment is a mild one. pric es probably will continue to creep upward, although some lines may decline. : Virtually none of the ex-.' perts expects that inflation will be so severe as recently. : .The handsome pink flamin go spends hours preening and primping. Its beauty calls to mind the feather boas and the plumed hats of the late 19th century. Flamingos, however, were generally spared by the plume hunters because their color fades rapidly after death.
