W. Cope- land company, 1765 North Riv erside ave., has been issued a $11,000 building permit to add to their present store building. Eagle Dance The Fraternal Order of Eagles will hold a New Year's eve party and dance Tues day, Dec. 31, at the Eagle's hall. Refreshments will be served, ac cording to officials. Flue Fire A flue fire alarm was answered by the Medford fire department about 3:40 p.m. on Friday at the residence of Ar thur E. Manter. 150916 East Main st. Firemen said no damage was reported. Chains Taken The theft of a set ,of tire chains from a car owned by Jack Ennis Babbitt, Antioch, Calif., was reported to Medford police Friday. Babbitt said they were taken while the car was parked on Welch st. Heater A electric heater shorted out in the residence of Joe W. Sayre Jr., 825 Grant st., about 12:44 p.m. Friday, accord ing to Medford firemen who an swered the alarm. They said damage was confined to the heat er. Dryer The Medford Fire de partment reported Saturday they answered an alarm at the home of Wendel Sessions, 113 Queen Ann ave., to extinguish smold ering lint in a clothes dryer. They reported no damage. . Hubcaps Taken Terrance La mont Miller, route 1, box 6, Ap plegate, reported to Medford po lice Thursday evening four hub caps were taken from his car while it was parked in the lot at the rear of the Holly Theater, Holly and Fifth sts. News About Servicemen GRADUATES . Sgt. Gurman V. Marney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Marney, route 1, Medford, recently grad uated from the chemical, bio logical and radiological school at Ft. Campbell, Ky. Marney is a fire-team leader in company D of the 101st Airborne division's 506th Infantry. , RECEIVES HONORS Pvt. Gifford S. Oakes, son of H. S. Oakes, 1111 Oak Grove rd., Medford, recently graduat ed with honors from the Army Medical Service school's X-ray procedures course at Ft. Sam Houston, Tex. Oakes received his basic training at Ft. Lewis, Wash., last spring. He is a 1952 graduate of Medford High school. AWARDED MEDAL Sgt. Richard D. Roberts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester L. Rob erts, Central Point, has been awarded the good conduct medal while serving with the 11th Air borne division in Germany. Rob erts has been in Europe since 1956. He graduated from Cen tral Point High school in 1951. COMPLETES PHASE Pvt. Arthur S. Monroe, whose wife Carol lives at 41 South Barneburg rd.,- Medford, recent ly completed the second phase of six months of active military training under the Reserve Forces act at the information school, Ft. Slocum, N. Y. Mon roe received eight weeks of train ing in the information school after completing his basic train ing course at Ft. Ord, Calif. PROMOTED Robert L. Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cooper, 1916 North Elm st., Medford, recently was promoted to sergeant in the Army in Germany where he is a member of the 3rd division. Cooper attended Crater High school. IN EXERCISE Pfc. Douglas M. Johnson, 24, whose wife, Marge, lives at 37 North Peach st., Medford, re cently participated with the 95th Engineer battalion in a week long . river crossing and bridge building exercise on the Rhine river in Germany. Johnson grad uated from Eagle Point High school in 1953. COMPLETES COURSE Capt. Wayne L. Norton, whose wife, Shirley, lives at 801 Park st., . Medford, has completed a 22-week course in the duties of a company level medical officer at the Army Medical school in Ft. Sam Houston, Tex. He will re port to Fitzsimmons Army hos pital in Denver, Colo., for duty. PROMOTED Ronald F. Singler has been promoted to staff sergeant fol lowing a six -month special course at Scott Air Force base in Illinois. He spent a brief holiday in the valley with his mother, Mrs. Ena Singler, 3138 Dark Hollow rd., and his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. -and Mrs. William Sing ler, Woodlawn dr. Sgt. Singler is now in charge of line maintenance for the fourth troop carrier squadron at Larson Air Force base, Washington. Car Theft Dorothy McEl hose, post office box 12, Old Stage rd., reported to Medford police a man who gave his name as Robert Blackwell, Los An geles, Calif., has not returned a car he rented from Daily's U Drive service, Medford airport. She told police Blackwell rented the car Dec. 14, saying he would return the car Dec. 16. a Collision Cars operated by Muriel Ann Barndenburg, 507 Barnes rd., and Martha Ann Bot chek, post office box 247, Rogue River, were involved in an acci dent Thursday evening on Cen tral ave., between Eighth and Ninth st. police reported. No ci tations were issued. Overheats The Ashland Fire department reports answering an alarm Saturday at 3:45 a.m. for an overheated watertank. They said the tank, located in the William Rickenback resi dence, 698 Roca st., had filled the pipes with steam. No damage was reported. Cited Medford police cited Dorothy Darlene Billups, 1025 Oak st., Central Point, for reck less driving Wednesday. They said she was operator of a car pursuing one driven by Homer Eugene Billups, 415 V2 Edwards st., Medford, which was involved in an accident with a parked car owned by Victor Norman Carr, Ceres, Calif. Homer Bill ups also was cited for reckless driving, police said. Break-In Jackson county sheriffs reported the Riverdale Cafe, north of Rogue River on Highway 99, was broken into last night. They said several dol lars in change was taken from a cigarette machine and a gum- ball machine was taken. Sher iffs said entrance to the building was made by breaking the front door window and reaching through the glass. This was the second time in three days the cafe has been broken into, sheriffs' officers said. Obituary Notices ROBERT MEADOWS Robert Eugene Meadows, in fant son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Meadows, Jr., Route 1, Box 49, Central Point, died in a local hospital Friday. Chapel Mort uary is in charge of funeral arrangements. JESSE DAVIS SMITH Funeral services for Jesse Davis Smith, 63, of Shady Cove, who died Friday, Dec. 20, 1957 in the Veteran's Hospital in Van couver, Wash, will be held at Conger-Morris Monday Dec. 30, 1957 at 10 a.m. with Bishop Dwaine Nelson of the Church of Jesus Christ, of the Latter Day Saints, Medford, officiating. Committal will be in Memory Gardens Memorial park. Mr. Smith was born in Cole man, Okla., July 15, 1894. He had been a resident of Shady Cove since 1950. He was a veter an of World War I. He was a member of Steelhead Post No. 6861, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Shady Cove, who will par ticipate in graveside services. Survivors include one son, Jesse Lawrence Smith, Shady Cove; one daughter Mrs. Lucille Allen, Shady Cove; two broth ers, Floyd Smith, of Ardmore, Okla, and Marvin F. Smith of Stockton, Calif., one sister, Mrs. Delia Martin of Denver, Colo., also four grandchildren. Pallbearers will be from Steel head post No. 6861, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Shady Cove and will include John Wilson, Edward Learning, Irvin House, Gene House, James Hopkins, and Reed McKay. JESSE J. HUGHES Ashland Jesse J. Hughes, 80, of 637 B St., Ashland, died suddenly at his home Dec. 27 He was born June 2, 1877 in Randolph, Wis. Mr. Hughes was a member of Ashland Assembly of God church. He moved to Medford in 1932 from North Dakota and several years later moved to Ashland where he made his home. He is survived by two broth ers, John L. Hughes and David J. Hughes, both Ashland, and two sisters, Mrs. J. G- Gussner, Bismarck, N.D., and Mrs. Frank Walbert, Burbank, Calif. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. in Litwiller's Mountain View chap el, Ashland with the Rev. R. L Cornwall, officiating. Entomb ment will be at the Rest Haven Mausoleum. LAURA ANN FURLONG Ashland Mrs. Laura Ann Furlong, 85, of 20LWindsor ave., died in Ashland, Dec. 26. She was born May 22 1872, in St. James, Minn. Mrs. Furlong is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, Medford. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sherman Feiss, Medford; four sisters, Mrs. Ad rian Ward, Menlo Park, Calif., Mrs. L. E. Rissler and Miss Em ma Mueller, both Palo Alto, Calif., Mrs. James Mackin, Port land, and three grandchildren. Rosary will be read at Sacred ICBM's Arrive At Test Center San Diego, Calif. (IP! Two new Atlas intercontinental ball istic missiles have arrived at Cape Canaveral, Fla., test center and are ready for testing, accord ing to a copyrighted story by the San Diego Union. The newspaper said the two 80-foot missiles left the Convair Astronautics plant here a week ago, just three days after the first successful test of an Atlas ICBM at Cape Canaveral on Dec. 17. The firing followed two ear lier missiles which were destroy ed in flight when they wobbled off course. L The union said the twin ship ment could be an indication that the big missiles have' entered the production line phase of their development or are near assembly line production. It said at least one other Atlas missile was believed to be at the test center before arrival of the San Diego shipment; - A fourth Atlas scheduled for firing soon after the Dec. 17 test was damaged during rocket en gine checks and won't be fired until next year, according to the newspaper.
