JITURNS TO MEDFORD Ray
Efcer, former manager of the
i. C. Penney company store in
Medford, will return here Jan.
1, to assume duties again as
manage?, it was announced to
day. He replaces J. B. Page,
who Is retiring. Baker left Med
ford in 1953 to manage the
Bremerton, Wash., store after
17 years in Medford. He has
a son and daughter who are
married and live in California.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker are owners
of a ranch near Medford.

In January, in Knoxville,
Tenn., the FBI had to step in
ard capture escaped convict
Robert Husky. He had made
good his escape from a state
prison by pouring disinfectant
on his feet. The bloodhounds
turned up their noses at his
trail and walked off the job.
Modernity
In February, in Los Angeles,
Jerry A. Prod, 19, was arrested
for shaving while driving. The
cop said Prod was hurrying to
work trying to steer his car
while using an electric razor.
Fortitude
In March, in Brie-Comte-Rob-ert,
France, Auguste Ibrelisle
won a bet of a bottle of cham
pagne by gulping nore than
four gallons of fresh clams in
less thanr'an hour. Then he drank
the champagne.
Mail Gall
In April, in Memphis, Tenn.,
a letter to a penal farm inmate
was returned to the post office
stamped "escaped." The post of
fice returned it to the sender
stamped: "Moved. Left no for
warding address."
Domesticity
In May, in Los Angeles, Mrs.
Robert Biggs got a divorce on
the ground that she was lonely.
Her husband owned a burlesque
theater.
Invention
In June, in Brawley, Calif.,
farmer W. I. Fifield reported
that a helicopter landed in his
watermelon patch, the pilot
jumped out, grabbed three mel
ons, jumped back in, took off.
Medicine
In July, in Tokyo, doctors pon
dered the case of the woman who
was allergic to her husband. A
top dermatologist flown from
the U.S. to investigate the case
reported only: "Whenever her
husband would come near her
she would break out in a rash
similar to poison ivy."
Outrageous Fortune
In September, in Pacoima,
Calif., Mrs. Virginia Schoen, 34,
who six months earlier had been
rescued by the fire department
when .her hands got caught in a
non-functioning garbage ma
chine did it again. Barefoot,
she tried to kick shut the refrig
erator door, got her big toe
caught in the hole left by a re
moved broken handle, got res
cued by the same F. D.
Philosophy
In October, in San Diego, bar
tender Pat Freeman unveiled a
"Sputnik Cocktail" designed for
engineers working at nearby
missile plants. Ingredients: Vod
ka and the juice of sour grapes.
The Military
Again October, in London, it
was disclosed in Parliament that
Britain has an enormous mili
tary stockpile of "pants, woolen,-
long" for the Women's Royal
Army Corps enough surplus
women's long underwear to last
the corps 800 years.
Identification
In November, In St. Paul,
Minn., a son was born to Mr.
and Mrs. Samuel Watkins and
named Sputnik Eisenhower Wat-kins.

said that Sputnik I made its
1,248th revolution Christmas

GRIEF STRICKEN BRIDE Arriving in New York aboard
the liner Liberte, Mrs. Nicole Wilson, a French bride of
two months, is comforted by unidentified priest after
learning that her husband, George M. Wilson, 24, of
Yonkers, N. Y., was killed in an auto accident. Wilson
was headed home to an apartment he had rented for his
bride and himself when the crash occurred.
