X " 1, " j r 4 list?- Friday, December 27. 1957 The Medical Roundup (f. vy On Finding One Has Cancer I recently read some interest ing letters written home by a man who had recently been told that he had an inop erable cancer. As most patients do, he faced the situation with great good sense and even a good deal of wry humor. He said he felt Dr. Alvarez like a bystander making arrange ments for the future of his loved ones, and attending to details of their life as it would be after he was gone. He felt as if he were planning a trip, with the tickets bought and the suitcase packed. But he would have to be on the plane before he would realize that it was he who was going. Weeks later he wrote about all the well-meaning people who were dropping in to tell him of treatments which they greatly wanted him to try. As he said, the pressure on him was great to get busy and do something, in spite of the doctor's opinion that there was nothing curative that could be done. As the man wrote, there is something challenging to a man when the doctors give up his case. Friends, relatives, .and even strangers started writing him and sending advertisements of quacks, or telling him of some one they knew who had been cured after the doctors had given him up. One woman wanted him to go to a quack who would ana lyze his blood with an electric gadget and then treat him with an Indian herb. Book on Molasses Someone sent a book on the healing powers of black-trap mo lasses. According to what the pa tient could learn, the fellow who wrote it was a musician! Then the patient was urged to try raw fruit juices. He was to buy a machine to squeeze out the juice, and this was supposed to cure almost anything. Garlic juice is said to be excellent for cancer. Then the man was urged by several persons to go to a so called cancer clinic in Texas. He was told he would pay $450 and get a guaranteed cure. The pa tient was given the addresses of two supposedly cured patients who lived nearby, but when he went to question them, he could n't learn anything because they both were dead! A friend offered to pay for all the patient's ex penses if he would go to the Texas outfit, but with rare good sense, the man telephoned the local Better Business Bureau to see what they had to say about the fellow. What they said was so bad that the patient declined his friend's kind offer. Then, fortunately, the patient heard of the fine Los Angeles Tumor Institute, founded by, my old friend, Dr. Albert Soiland, and now he is taking x-ray treat- ' Ne REPLACING Marshal Geor gi Zhukov, N. (International) 'World Service' Dance Scheduled at Medford Y A "World Service" dance has been scheduled by the YMCA after the Medford-Astoria bas ketball game Saturday, Dec. 28, at 10 p.m., according to Herb Partridge, youth work secre tary. Dance Chairman Jeanne War- nock, announced all proceeds from the dance will be given ,to YMCA world service. Harry Crofoot will entertain and pro vide records at the dance. Sponsoring the dance are the Misses Warnock, Dwanda Win- chell, Sue Hall, Caron Leffler, Sandy Maxson, Joanne Robert son, Mimi Jones, Colleen Barr and Danusia Kosecka. Is Cancer Contagious? In spite of the fact that every so often I say in this column that, so far as is known, cancer is not contagious, I still am be seiged by many anxious people who are terrified for fear that they'll catch cancer from some one else in' the family. I, person ally, have no fear of dealing with the many persons I see with cancer, and I know of no statistics to indicate that we phy sicians and surgeons, who are constantly dealing with such pa tients ever catch it from them. Can A Woman Over SO Have A Baby? Many women around the age of 50 wonder if they might still be able to have a baby. They want to know when they can quit worrying. If they have quit menstruating, conception is ex tremely improbable; if they are still menstruating, it is highly improbable, but not impossible. Once, when I asked the doctor-readers of Modern Medicine, which I help edit, to write me if they had ever known a woman to have a baby after the meno pause, a very few wrote to say that they had seen this happen once or twice. Statistics show that few women over 45 have a baby, and if they do conceive, they are likely to miscarry. The Doctor's Day Off I recently read the description by a busy physician (Dr. Edwin T. Arnold Jr., of Hogansville, Ga.) of his day-off. He writes, "I made nine home calls; went to a hospital 15 miles away to visit a young friend; bought a new car; and made a long talk to a church group. After this I made six more home calls, and got home about 11 p.m." I hope all old doctors of this type do not die off we need them so badlyl Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail.
