o o Plans Surprise For Sooners at Bowl Mm Editors not: This is th eighth of 10 dispatches on the football bowl teams. The dis patches will cover the teams in the Gator. Orange, Rose, Sugar and Cotton Bowls. Br WILLIAM A. SHIRES Durham, N.C. OH Duke, taking a leaf from Notre Dame's notebook, figures its success in the Orange Bowl against Okla homa depends upon effort ex traordinary, plus conditioning. Coach Bill Murray believes his squad will be mentally pre pared for a maximum effort. The Blue Devils usually have fared well against major oppon ents during Murray's coaching regime. Conditioning has been stress ed in Duke preparations for the New Year's Day game. And it has been costly in the way of injuries. Rugged Practice Brings Injuries Murray admits trouble in keeping his first three units in tact because of injuries in rug fad practices. A major blow was the loss of guard Phil Scu dieri, playing on the No. 1 unit in place of ailing All-Conference guard Ray Hord. During the reg ular season Duke lost second unit Carol Jamison. Tackle Tom Topping, another All-Conference player, returned to practice Thursday for the first time since the Clemson game in November. Injuries hit as many as five starters, but all except Scuderi are expected to be ready. Sunshine Drills Friday Duke begins practice In the sunshine at Miami Friday and Murray's plans are to keep the accent on conditioning right up until game time. Against Okla homa's speed, Murray figures it is essential to alternate fresh units frequently and hopes to have three units of almost equal strength. "We must count on our play ers being at a peak of condition ing, Murray explained. He con cedes Oklahoma has an edge in team speed. Duke is known as a team that features raw power team of brawn which likes to beat down an opponent by brute kstrength. Murray contends that Notre Dame beat Oklahoma "just by knocking them down," and he adds, "that's the way you have to do it." What, if any, innovations for the Blue Devils' split-T have been installed during practice is something which Murray de clines to disclose. There are re ports of some new plays. Mur ray does say Oklahoma ?has less variety than we do" and they "just beat you at football." Sport j&v OSCAR FRALEY I Parade ijSSkr Sport w,i,er ' Wl UMC jjfcVjL-. U"i,ed Pres New York HH Seattle, Day ton and California had the big city blues today as they step ped fearfully into Madison Square garden to prep for the Holiday Basketball festival. "It's an old, old story to the eams from out in the country, They get one look at the vast ness of Madison Square garden and sure-fire All-Americans from the other' side of the Alleghen ies develop two hands full of thumbs. Then, too, there's that con founded brand of eastern bask etball which is patterned after professional play. A Sure All-American Before you credit this to New York provincialism, listen to Johnny Castellani of Seattle. The little man from the Pacific Northwest has a sure-pop All- America ui . big Elgin Baylor but even so he isn't expecting any belated Christmas gifts Thursday. "They play a different type of basketball here," Johnny, a former Notre Dame assistant, . complained as he looked for ward to facing a field which Includes such pro-type teams as Pitt, Temple, NYU, Manhattan and Connecticut. "In the east they use the give- and-go a great deal," he said "Out in the west we don't meet this type of offense, so why should I stress defense against It when we only see it a couple of times a year? Basketball beyond the east is llmost exclusively the fast break plus a pattern-type at tack. Eastern coaches sneer at some of these offenses and pre fer the fast-breaking improvis ation plus the give-and-go pick- off which the kids absorb from the pros. One Reason for Loss This was one of the reasons why St. Bonaventure was able to beat Seattle : and Elgin Baylor in the National Invit- atin Tournament last season. The six-foot, six-inch Seattle star sobbed afterwards that it was one of his poorest performances. TRIO IMPRESS CURTICE Stanford, Calif. (W Gerald Nesbitt of Arkansas, Jim Shof ner of Texas Christian and Joe Francis of Oregon State im pressed Coach Jack Curtice of the West squad Monday in a workout for Saturday's clash with the East in the Shrine foot ball game. Nesbitt and Shofner did some good punting. Francis, a tailback in Oregon State's sin gle wing offense, is working as a T-formation quarterback. FLU KAYOS PACE Santa Clara, Calif. (IP) The East's hopes of defeating the West in Saturday's Shrine All Star football game sank today because Jim Pace, star back from Michigan, is in the Santa Clara Infirmary with an attack of flu. "The outlook isn't too bright. We haven't been able to field a com plete team yet for practice be cause of illness," " said Penn State's Rip Engle, the East coach. Bay At Builders Supply QUALITY BLOCKS Bricks, Fines, Drain Tile 727 W. McAndrews Ph. SP 2-4107 This is not to insinuate that Seattle, California, Dayton and other teams from the great beyond don't play fine, fast basketball. Nor that they don't have players as good, or better than the players in the east. Baylor certainly is one of the best in the country, a player who, it has been said by rivals, lives up to every drop of ink the Seattle publicity man uses on him. He is rugged on defense where he led the nation with 553 rebounds last season, and offensively was third with a 29.7 point per game average. "He's the best all - around college player I've ever seen," Castellani says of the 22-year-old, 225-pound junior from Washington, D. C. "But last year when we came In here to the Garden he was just a great big bundle of nerves." That's the way it affects all of them when they finally get to the Garden. And, when they have to face that unknown give-and-go on top of it, the job sometimes is just too much. Which is why the western coaches aren't making any claims before the opening whistle. GROZA HOLDS RECORD Cleveland, Ohio (IP) Lou Groza of the Cleveland Browns takes a National Football League record of scoring in 71 straight games into Sunday's title game with the Detroit Lions. SPORTS Tuesday, December 24, I9S7 .Beavers Tip Indiana in 6th Victory Bloomington, Ind. (IP) Ore gon State defeated Indiana 62-51 Monday night for its sixth bas ketball victory against one de feat so far this season. The victory gave Coach Slats Gill's Beavers an even split on their two-game western invasion. They lost to Iowa in overtime Saturday. Oregon State, paced by Ken Nanson, put on a strong second half drive to win from Indiana. The score was tied at 31-all at the half and Indiana twice went into three-point leads early in the second half. But Nanson and the Beavers took over and pulled out to a safe lead. Nanson had 26 points while Dave Gambee, OSC's scoring ace, was held to 10. Lee Harman also got 10 for OSC. Archie Dees, the big Indiana center, scored 25 points. Casper Planning To Rest Before Entering Tourney Chino, Calif. W Billy Cas per Jr. settled back Tuesday for a rest from the tourney cir cuit until the Los Angeles Open gets under way Jan. 2 after pocketing $1,000 top money in the Pomona Valley Open golf contest. Although Casper didn't need the money, since he has picked up nearly $50,000 this year, he said he played in the Pomona Valley event to keep his "com petitive edge." "I won't play again until the Los Angeles Open," he said. . OREGON HOLDS TUNE-UP Los Angeles (IB Oregon's Monday preparations for its Rose Bowl football game with Ohio State included a 20-minute scrim mage which featured the run ning of fullback Jack Mortis and halfback 'Charlie Tourville. Har ry Mondale, guard and' co-captain, has a cold and spent the day in his room. , CLOSE BOWL SCORES Dallas, Tex. OP! With Navy and Rice preparing for their Jan. 1 football game in Dallas, it's interesting to note that in the 21 previous Cotton Bowl con tests, there's a difference of only 1.6 points between the average scores of the host and visiting teams. LIONS DRAW CROWDS Detroit (IP) The Detroit Lions played before 618,253 spectators during their 12 regular season games this year for an average of 51,521 per game. WVU INVITED Lexington, Ky. HP) West Vir ginia University, which won Kentucky's Invitation basketball tournament last weekend, today was invited to defend its cham pionship in the 1958 renewal of the event.
