STXTTE1 MEDTORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, December 22, 1957 O o Grange Notes Upper Appl?at Grange Four candidates, including Lloyd and Marie Louise Nord C wick and Forbes and Lula Brown, were initiated into the third and fourth degrees when Upper Applegate Grange held its final meeting for 1957 Wednes day. Dec. 18. Beautiful tableau scenes ar ranged by lecturer Gladys Wil liams, with sister Ethel West par ticipating, were presented dur ing the degree work. Sister El eanor Ramsey wag soloist, sing ing "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." In the regular business session which followed, the relief com mittee reported sister Evelyn Williams and her daughter have been ill at their home in Med ford. Rolland Smith is convalesc ing with a fractured foot sus tained when he fell some 30 feet from a barn window while loading hay; and Louis Straub is recovering from, a crushed finger. Price trends reported by the agriculture committee indicated an increase of 8 cents in the price offered for beef cattle in 1957 over that of the preceding year, and a 2-cent increase in the price of milk to the produc er. In addition, it was pointed out, both dairy operators and cattlemen enjoy a further ad vantage in the abundant supply of low-priced hay now prevail ing. Letters of congratulation to Upper Applegate Grange for its entry in the 1957 National Com-3-munity Service contest were read from the National Grange Master Herschel Newsome and State Grange Master Elmer Mc ,Clure. Accompanying them was wall plaque for display in the Grange hall meeting room, and a check for $40 from the Sears Roebuck Foundation which co sponsors the contest in conjunc tion with the National Grange. Purchase of lumber necessary to construct benches for use in the dining room was authorized. It is hoped these may be com jleted in time for the first meet ing in January, 1958. The ways and means commit tee, composed of brothers George Redhead and Morris Byrne, and sisters Mamie Winningham and Grace Buck, was given full re sponsibility to complete arrange ments and publicity for the New Year's Eve public dance to be held in the Grange hall. q Community singing of Christ mas carols led by sisters Eleanor Ramsey and Kathleen Scovell, and a tableau portraying the manger scene comprised the lec turer's program. Participating in the tableau were sister- Ethel West as Mary, brother Fred West as Joseph and brothers George Redhead and Omar Culy as shep- w herds. Old toys including dolls, doll dishes, a teddy bear, and a zither were exhibited on the display table. A lovely wreath of sil vered evergreens and cones, the award for the oldest toy dis played, went to sister Grace Pearson for a doll's tea set pre sented in 1873 to her mother on the latter's sixth birthday anni versary. The evening concluded with a social hour in the dining room during which the home econom ics committee served refresh ments of gingerbread men, as sorted Christmas cookies and coffee at tables made festive with groups of tall red candles in arrangements of silvered pine boughs and cones. Talent Youth Fined In District Court James S. Cullop, 18, of Old Pacific highway. Talent, plead ed guilty in district court Fri-i day afternoon to petty larceny ; and was sentenced to one year ; in jail. Cullop was also given the right to obtain probation after 60 days. Two 17-year-olds, one from Talent and one from Ashland, apprehended with him, were re ferred to juvenile authorities. They were apprehended by Ashland ciry police while break ing into a car behind Busch Ford Sales on Siskiyou blvd.. Ashland, Wednesday night. Ash- j land police said the youths took two boxes of clothing from the ; car and transferred it to their own car whan caught. According to the district court i report a charge is pending against Cullop on non-support. Assistant Supply Officer Assumes Duties Camp White Byron L.
