Mr. and Mrs. Ken Oliver, of Shady Cove, en route to California for the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Scott and Scott's mother, of Centralia, Wash., were visitors at the home of Mrs. Scott's cousin and hus band Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Howe of Trail. her Mr. of Friends have received word from Mrs. Ruth Sanford and daughter. Ann Sanford of Shady Cpve, from South Caro lina. They were on their way to New York where they plan to spend the holidays with friends and Ann will audition for some shows back there. Dallas Schiller of Ft. Lewis, Wash., will spend the Christmas holidays with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Zawedzke of Sbady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Figuer oa and daughter, Brenda, are here for the Christmas holidays visiting Mrs. Figueroa s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Busch, of Trail. Figueroa will be at sea for a year in the Mediterranean on he USS Saratoga. Mrs. Fig ueroa and daughter will stay witti her parents during her husbands absence. Hank Davis, son of Mr. and Cove, has been ordered by his doctor to spend the next three months in bed and he cannot have any other children visit him until he is better. Billy Pfeifer of Shady Cove is convalescing at his home fol lowing his return from Sacred Heart hospital. Although he will have to return for skin graft ing on his leg, the doctor thinks he will be able to return to school after the Christmas holi days. A group of local women made a tour of the Holiday Houses sponsored by the Prospect Gar den club. Those attending were Mesdames Earl Sheppard, Bill Shepherd, Pearl Adair and Wil liam Bishop who rode up with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kelley and Mesdames Verne Wilson, Dick Bartuss, all of Shady Cove. Dec orated homes visited were those of the Leo Hoags. Bruce Mathi sons, Paul Does. Richard Lown ey's, Ella Warren and the Tin ney's. Refreshments were ser ved at the home of Mrs. Wil lard Huffman. Farm Slarket Potato prices remained stcadv here today but central Oregon shipping point quotations slightly lower this week with sntnp sales down to 2.25-2.30 a hundred weight for russets: Arizona lettuce sold at 3-3.75. j Mrs. Rankin Speaks I At Council Meeting Mrs. Fred E. Rankin, who was recently appointed a member of the state's committee on services to the aging by Governor Robert Holmes, spoke at a meeting of the Medford Inter-Agency coun cil this week. Mrs. Rankin, who is the only member from southern Oregon, outlined purposes of the com mittee, which was established by the Legislature during the Spring session. The committee will study problems of aging people of the slate, provide consulting services to local communities, cooperate with local agencies, both public and private, which are concerned with the problems of the aging and cooperate with state and federal agencies in all matters affecting the problems of the aging. . Mrs. Rankin is president of the Altrusa club and a former executive secretary of the Jack son county chapter of the Ameri can Red Cross. The Inter-Agency council, which is composed of represen tatives of 26 local, county, state and federal agencies in this area, went on record as approving the purposes of the legislation which established the committee, and agreed to assist Mrs. Rankin in formulating plans for a Jackson county committee on services to the aging. The board of directors of the Rogue Valley Memorial hospi tal, meeting recently, named new members to the board, and elected officers for the year. The Rt. Rev. Benjamin D. Dagwell, Bishop of the Episco pal diocese of Oregon, was again named chairman. Eugene Thorndike is vice chairman, Dwight Houghton is treasurer, and Leon Boomer is secretary and assistant treasurer. Board members either elected or reelected included Alfred S. V. Carpenter, Walter Garner, Martin Luther. S. M. Tuttle, George Flanagan and Otto Boh nert. Bishop Dagwell named Glenn Jackson to serve with the offi cers of the board on the execu tive committee. Expenses Listed During the meeting, it was pointed out that operating ex penses per day for hospitals in Oregon, California and Wash ington average $43.22, but that the Rogue Valley hospital so far has managed to keep costs be low that average, the costs here ! totaling S37.46 per day on the average. These costs include all ex-' penses, such as room, meals, drugs, laboratory, surgery, as well as general costs such as overhead, insurance, mainte nance and so on, the board was told. The board also was reminded that the average length of stay in hospitals at present is far less than it used to be. At present it is 5.3 days, compared to 10 and 15 days a generation ago. The board also heard of a plan originated by members of the auxiliary, which has since been placed into effect, whereby "gift certificates" for hospital care, in any amount, can be pur chased for friends or relatives. A number of individuals have already taken advantage o the plan, it was reported. Family night at the Medford YMCA today will be highlighted with a Christmas party for mem bers of the YMCA and their fam ilies and newcomers to the city, according to Mrs. Owen Kunkel, family program chairman. The program of games in the social hall will start at 7:30 p.m. and Mrs. Gene Chamberlain will be in charge. There will be a Christmat tree with gift ex) change for those families whose; children would like to Ijring gifts; to exchange. Carol singing will be conduct ed by the Rev.
