My home and par ents embarrass me. Mrs. L. M. Ours is a good home and we are hard-working parents. Martha M My parents think I am a terrible girl to complain about them when they do so much for me, but I think they aren't'really as unselfish as they like to make out. I am 15 and I have just started dating this year. Naturally I want my home and my parents to make as good an impression as possible. It embarrasses me very much if my mother wanders around in a house dress with her hair a mess when friends come to call. Half the time my father is slouched In his chair in the living room with his shoes off and papers scattered all over the place. This isn't the worst of it. Our living room looks just awful. Everything is shabby and my kid brother and sisters are constantly tearing up the place and throw ing things at each other. Mrs. L. M. To hear Martha talk, you'd think we were all a bunch of slobs, living in a pig sty. Actually our home is one of the cleanest in the neighborhood. It may get a bit messy at times, but what can you expect when you have active youngsters and they are confined to a small space? Martha takes her dating much too seriously. She seems to want the house to be fixed up like a stage set and to have us all get dressed up to act minor roles in some sort of performance in which she is the star. We have tried to play along with her on it, but my husband and I feel pretty silly when we've gotten all dressed up in our best to shake hands with some stutter ing, pimply-faced kid. I can't seem to make Martha realize that . she should not be ashamed of her good home and hard-working parents. The Council: We svmoathize with both Martha and her Bar ents. A dating girl wants and needs a reasonably attractive home background. On the other hand, parents have some right to ease and comfort in their own home and everything can't be turned up side down at Mar tha's direction. Perhaps it would help Mr. and Mrs. L. M. to realize, however, that Martha's desire to have things just right is somewhat of a tribute to their unbnnging. This girl wants to present her self in the best possible light, as a person coming from a taste ful, elegant home. The fact that TOO IATE TO CLASSIFY FURN. apt. for rent. Mrs. E. E. Instead of accusing Martha of being ashamed of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. would do well to take stock of the home situation and cooperate with her as far as possible. They should ask her for help and suggestions in improving the appearance of the living room. They'll probably discover that much can be done on a modest budget if lots of goodwill and energy are brought to bear. If Martha sees that her parents are trying to cooperate, her de mands upon them may become less severe. The recognition that her parents are prepared to be genuinely helpful to her in the often difficult teenage social re lationships may in itself be suffi cient to take some of the strain out of dating for Martha. Incidentally, these parents are all wrong to scoff at Martha's "stuttering, pimply-faced" boy friends. These boys represent Man to Martha. They are mys terious, challenging, exciting and are entitled to all the respect her own eager feelings would give them. (Copyright 1957, General Features Corp.)
