Livosfcck Tigs Are Available in Area Salem Livestock producer tags are available from Kizzie Edmondson, box 164, Butte Falls, according to Chester Liechty of the animal industry division, state department of ag riculture. The tags are issued free. The department remineded farmers and ranchers that they need to attach a tag to each an imal carcass transported or sold. If only part of a carcass is sold or hauled, it, too, should have tag attached. The tags are required by law as part of the state livestock theft prevention program. It is illegal either to sell or receive carcasses without the state tag attached. Friday the 13th Is Somewhat Black for Grants Pass Family Grants Pass Friday the 13lh turned out to be sort of a black day in the Schoenleber home here. Sgt. William Schoenlebe of the Grants Pass police depart ment was checking parking meter on H t. Friday morn ing. One of the cart looked familiar. It was his, parked there by his wife. The sergeant wrote out a ticket for over-parking and stuck it on the windshield. "I couldn't do anything else," he said, "I didn't have a nickel to put in the meter." " Sgt. Schoenleber bad a feel ing that things might be even blacker when he arrived borne Friday evening. Pedestrian Safety Stressed by Council Sunday, December 18, 19S7 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRlBtflfErTtNE Mrs. Carter Named Head of Pioneer Group Mrs. Anna Carter of Medford was elected president of the Southern Oregon Pioneer So ciety at a meeting in Ashland recently. Other officers elected at the reorganizational meeting includ ed Mrs. Herbert Hanna, vice president and treasurer, and Miss Claire Hanley, secretary. A total of 27 members at tended the meeting, which was conducted by Mrs. Carter. The Medford Safety Council is stressing pedestrian safety in its annual Christmas safety campaign, the Council has an nounced. The Council noted longer hours of darkness, Christmas shopping, haste, and holiday drinking by both pedestrians and motorists increases the usual pedestrian hazards. A special study of 501 Christ mas holiday accidents shows that one-third of the pedestrians killed contributed to their own deaths by crossing between in tersections, stepping from be hind a parked car or walking along a roadway. Four out of 10 of the victims were 65 years old or older, the Council said. To avoid being hit, the Coun cil urged pedestrians to (1) cross streets only at intersections and to stay within crosswalks, (2) obey traffic signals, signs, regu lations and directions of traffic officers, (3) do not dash into the street or walk from locations where parked cars or buildings obstruct the view, (4) be sure there is time to cross safely be fore stepping from the curb, and (5) walk to the left, facing traf fic if there are no sidewalks.
