President Thomas Jefferson is supposed to have re marked in a skeptical tone when he heard the announcement that two Yale professors, Kingsley and Silliman, were convinced the shower of meteorites which fell at Weston, Conn., in December, 1807, had actually come from the sky. At that date, the majority of scientists shared the disbelief of President Jefferson. Since that time, convincing evidence has proved that stones from outer space are drawn into the earth's atmosphere by the gravitational pull of the planet. Traveling from 10 to 45 miles per second, the friction of the air causes these "shooting stars" to become luminous for a very brief period of time. Usually just an instant or at most a few seconds. On the astronomical agenda for the morith of December are two meteor showers, the Gemi nids and Ursids. The Geminids, second strongest meteor shower of the year, reach their maxi mum activity Dec. 13. At that time, under favorable conditions (little or no interference from artificial lights) as many as 40 meteors may be observed by one person in a single hour. Given clear skies, this should be a good year for observation of the Geminids as these meteors are more numerous before mid night and the last quarter moon will not interfere. The Geminid meteors were given this name because they seem to radiate or come from a point near the star, Castor, in the constellation Gemini the Twins. They are bright meteors moving with medium speed. . Meteors may be seen on any night of the year. An average of seven meteors per hour is often observable when no meteor shower is in progress. At certain times of the year, the earth in its journey around the sun, encounters large num bers of meteors all traveling to gether along the same path or orbit. This is called a meteor shower. Meteor showers will oc cur in nine of the 12 months of 1958. No showers are scheduled for March, June, or September. The strongest shower of the year occurs in August. The Ursid meteors will reach their highest point Dec. 22, with an anticipated maximum of 15 per hour. They will radiate from a point near the bowl of the Little Dipper.
