This canine heavywei g h t has a bankroll, an air - condi t i o n e d dog house and his own chauffeur- Vernon Scott ed station wagon. He'll be a big star in movies when his first picture is released next month, but his video performances are limited to "bit" parts. Spike plays the title role in "Old Yeller," which enables him to live high on the hog. But un less he latches onto a TV series, he might prove to be a dog in the manger. Owned and trained by Frank Weatherwax brother of Las sie's owner-trainer Rudd Weath erwax Spike is putting on the dog in a big way. Long Wait for Success "He has a right to live it up," says Weatherwax. "He waited a long time for his chance, and when it arrived he came through like a thoroughbred." Spike is a success in the rags-to-riches tradition. He is an or phan and a refugee from the dog pound. . , "Some of my best actors come from there," Weatherwax added. "I was talent hunting around the animal shelter about four years ago when I noticed Spike. He was a forlorn - looking pup, all head and feet, but he had appeal. That's what makes stars. I bailed him out for $3 and went to work." Although Spike learned fast under Frank's coaching, acting jobs were as rare as fire hydrants at a dog show. "He's just too big six feet tall on his hind feet," Weather wax lamented. "Spike has talent all right, but there aren't any parts for a guy his size. He fills the entire TV screen to the point Vehicle Laws To Be Riqidly Enforced Rigid enforcement of motor vehicle laws will be made bv the Rfedford police during the Christ mas holidays, according to Chief Charles P. Champlin. Champlin said a national study shows that 55 per cent of ail fatal accidents during the holi day season have involved drink ing. He added that 94 per cent of all accidents in Oregon are directly caused by traffic law violations on the part of at least one driver. He said the success or failure of Oregon efforts to have a safe holiday season will rest with the actions of every individual. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to use more caution dur ing the winter months because of winter driving conditions. Spike was up for lead role in 20th Century - Fox's remake of "Call of th Wild," but the studio cancelled the picture. Then Walt Disney came to the rescue with "Old Yeller." With his roughcut appearance and loveable personality, Spike is being hailed as a Wallace Berry type. His size and shaggy yellow coat made him a natural for the picture. "This dog has personality," his trainer said, patting Spike on the head. "A great actor. He can look sad, happy, or anything else you want."
