I II uiemicai increases Poinsettia Longevity Minneapolis (IP) A Uni versity of Minnesota floricultur ist is getting good results with experiments to increase the last ing quality of poinsettias. Those popular Christmas plants will retain their showy red leaves longer, R. E. Widmer found, if they are treated with a chemical growth regulator nor mally used on tomatoes. Five weeks after the chemical had been applied, the poinsettias had lost only one-fifth to one- sixth as many leaves as did un treated plants. Widmer warned that growth regulators should be applied by greenhouse operators, not con sumers. He said only a minute quantity of the chemical should be used. Toledo, Ohio, is the greatest coal shipping point in the world, the Lake Erie port being an ex port center for coal from Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. Local young - people home from college for the Thanksgiv ing vacation were Cheryl Smith, who is attending Chico State college: Art Blanchard Jr. and Mark Bonner, attending Shasta college at Redding and Robert Black from Oregon ' State col lege. Mrs. Elva Schakow made a business trip to Redding ' last week. Thanksgiving week end guests at the Frank Graves home were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jorgensen and family of Willows; Mr. and Mrs. Philip York and son of Ono, Shasta county; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert De Avilla and fam ily of Yreka. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Rose and son, Fred, entertained with a dinner Thanksgiving for Mrs. Stuart Taylor and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Rose and daughter, Jackie, all of Yreka, and Stanley Rose of Happy Camp.
