Jonn J. Crabb, principal at (Jacksonville, was present at the board meeting Thursday, and when it was brought out that he had released local students from their high school classes 15 minutes early in order to re lieve the situation, parents on the opposing side "presented united front" against having their high school children miss (O part of their afternoon classes The only solution to the prob- O Iem, officials said, is to employ another bus during the after noon to take primary children home. Tha drawback to this is a cost to the district of $900 for a bus for the remainder of the school year. No funds had been budgeted for this, and the only other possible alternative is to file a request for emergency funds from the Jackson county rural school board. It was point ed out that Evans Valley is the one other school in the county using one bus for both high school and grade pupils. Opin ions of the Ruch PTA and of parents of high school students showed a willingness for the ex penditure of an added bus. There is a bus available locally for this purpose, it was stated. Eight miles of logging access road built last year on Elliott Creek by Bates lumber company of Merlin is being graveled at the present time by a crew of 12 men working under Ralph Cor- lette, Oswego, Ore., contractor. The Bates company has desig nated an eight mile stretch for graveling, using 14,000 cubic feet of gravel. Ivan Bowen of La Pine is foreman on the job, Mr. and Airs. Clifford Jones and daughter, Kristy, went skiing at Crater Lake recently. Floyd Hawkins and Harley Hall made , week end duck hunting expedition to Bly. A Christmas party with gift exchange and revelation of se cret pals will highlight the meet ing of lower Applegate exten sion unit meeting Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 10:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Lester Rich on Thompson creek. Mrs. Charles Elmore will be cohostess. The ACWW com mittee has arranged for a show ing of three films on foreign . countries. (-Otis Buck, at home and recov ered from eye surgery at Good O Samaritan hospital in Portland, has expressed his interest in the community news column, and through it wishes to express thanks to the many friends who sent greetings during his recoV' ery. Children of the Applegate school are returning to classes after a mumps epidemic which caused an absence of 24 Friday. The school will present their Christmas program Thursday evening, Dec. 19, after' which Santa will appear with his sack of treats. School will close Dec. 20, and will reconvene Jan. 2. The Parent Teacher association met Friday with a film on under standing children as the chief feature. Mrs. Leonard Miller is president of the group. Mr. and Mrs. Powell Carpen ter of Ojai, Calif., were recent weekend guests of Carpenter's mother, Mrs. Edna Sawyer. Car penter is general manager of the Santa Barbara employment of fice, and the couple also visited his sister, Mrs. Robert Lock wood, of Medford. An exchange of gardening gifts will be a feature of the Christmas meeting of the Apple- gate Valley Garden club at the home of Mrs. Robert Sorber Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 1:30 p.m. Games and colored slides are scheduled. Anyone interest ed is welcome to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Farrand were guests at a dinner at the hbme of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Davis Nov. 26 honoring their 34th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. George Redhead also were guests. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert DeVos attended the 50th anniversary dinner of Medford Typographi cal union at Hotel Jackson Sun day afternoon. DeVos is a printer at the Mail Tribune, and has been in the business about 30 years, some of which were spent in Phoenix and Prescott, Ariz. A county road crew has been doing some improvement on the east side road in the Upper Ap plegate section this week, mak ing fills and widening at the foot of a rock cliff, where an irrigation flume has just been removed. A band concert by Ruch pu pils, who are directed by Mar vin Throne, was presented at the PTA meeting Friday. Throne featured novelty numbers, and those appearing in solo and duet numbers were John Straube, Glo ria Wilmoth, and Madge Bar ker. Beginning students who have entered the main band are Kathryn Larson, Linda Best, Mary Ann and Madge Barker, Gloria Wilmoth, David Gregory, and Robert Straube. The group sang carols before the business meeting. Rural Reflections: Local ladies still are aghast over the dis covery that for the most part there was little resemblance be tween them and their photo graphs taken in earlier days when wide-eyed innocence and round faces characterized most individuals. As a recreational activity at Home Extension meet ing, ladies inspected 15 child hood photos, attempting to iden tify the pictures, and there was much scrutinizing of noses, eyes, hair, and stature of those present in an effort to tag the pictures on display. Some might have been successful, but lost their clues in misjudging the period of photographic style.
