SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wedneiday, December 11, 1957 Baskefs Planned For Disiribuiion On Christmas Day Baskets of groceries will be delivered to all needy families this year instead of giving food orders on grocery stores, accord ing to Captain William Ricken of the Salvation Army here. O . A free turkev dinner will be held at the Salvation Army shel ter at 236 North Bartlett st. in Medford at 2 p.m. on Christmas day for the transient family or single man. The Salvation Army will also visit all public and private hos pitals and rest homes. Captain Ricken said. On the list is the Camp White domiciliary. Sacred Heart, Rogue River and Osteo pathic hospitals. The county farm home, county jail, juvenile detention home and the city jail are also on the list. Gifts and reading material will be given to some 2.C00 persons, Captain Ricken said. This year the Medford Elks Lodge and the Salvation Army will combine their efforts in pre paring baskets, purchasing food and delivering it. Captain Ricken explained how the "basket clearing bureau" of the Medford Inter-Agency coun cil functions. The name of each person reported needing help is listed and checked. Those re ports found to be incomplete are given special attention. So far families on the list in clude 25 from Medford, three of Jacksonville, one Eagle Point, three in Central Point, three in Camp White, four in the Four Corners area and several from the Ashland - Phoenix - Talent area, Captain Ricken said. Seven Grants Pass families who are to be referred back to the Salva tion Army committee at Grants Pass have been listed also. Donations needed for the bas kets include canned goods, milk, bread, fruit cake and other items. Those wishing to donate such items should call SPring 2-4230 as soon as posible and all donations will be picked up, Captain Ricken said. The total Christmas effort by Qhe Salvation Army js financed by the annual letter appeal and Christmas Kettle income, Cap tain Ricken said. So far response this year has been slow, he said. Ambassador to Greece, moving him from his current post in Yugoslavia, Riddleberger, a ca reer officer at the State Depart ment since 1929, has been ambas sador to Yugoslavia since 1953. He will succeed former Ambas sador to Greece George V. Allen who has been named new direct or of the U. S. Information Agency. O Christmas Singing In Residential Area Planned By Church Christmas carolling will begin this week in Medford's residen tial district as members of the local Seventh-day Adventist churches launch an annual ap peal to friends and neighbors for gifts to aid in maintaining their welfare program at home and abroad. Carolling will be done in dif ferent areas each night, weather permits between now and Christ mas with the exception of Friday and Saturday nights. According to Medford church pastor John D. Trude, Seventh day Adventist church workers are supported entirely by the Biblical tithing system making it possible for all funds received to go directly to the welfare min istry. "We feel," Pastor Trude said, "that in no greater way can we observe the true spirit of the Christmas season than -by re membering Christ through aid ing some of His children in less fortunate circumstances than ours. The money," he continued, "may feed and clothe a hungry family in the United States or furnish a hospital bed for some one unable to pay for medical care in a far away land." Mr. Lewis Corwin, home mis sionary leader in the Medford church, stated gifts of food and clothing would also be welcomed for use in local welfare work by the church's Dorcas societies. o o o o o fof rr"k res' . When a woman has troubles, she often dumps them, sociolo gists state, into the nearest de partment store and emerges wearing a new dress and feeling much better. When a department store has troubles, it holds a mammoth sale. Who Tends to Bartender? But when a bartender has troubles, where can he turn, to whom can he pour out his agony? No one. He just has to if you will permit me to use the word bottle up his woes inside him self, flick away an incipient tear, and smile through the cigarette haze. Now, in addition to having to endure his own sorrow in sil ence, this great man is being saddled with a new burden. He is being enjoined to ladle out ad vice, words of social wisdom, as well as drinks. After listening, he's supposed to talk back. jeo Perlis, director of com munity activities for the AFL CIO, is quoted as saying his de partment will begin soon a na tion-wide program training bar tenders in the field of social work. "Bartenders," he says, "see more people with personal prob lems than social workers do." Granted. At least, they see more talkative people with per sonal problems. But Perlis con tinues: "Instead of just listening to the customer with a problem, these trained bartenders will be able to refer them to the proper com munity agency." There is one factor in this devilishly cute scheme that Per lis is overlooking the customer. Does he want advice. 1 think not. He will rebel at advice, however nicely proffered. What he wants is to talk out his woes, and not be told what to do about them. For, as the Wall Stree Journal points out in a thoughtful editor ial: "advice from the bartender actually is the last thing in the world a man wants. He knows very well that he will get all he needs on all his problems just as soon as he gets home." No, it is not the customer who needs to be helped. He's helping himself. It's the bartender who needs help. And what he needs, I specifically, is someone who will shut up and listen. Right here and now, "a move ment is being launched to edu cate customers to pay attention to bartenders and encourage them to spill their grief on sym pathetic ears. Quiet, now, and let 'em talk.
