o o n Comment . . . TELEVISION and RADIO By John Crosby BY JOHN CROSBY THEY'LL BE HUNTED DOWN LIKE ANIMALS Right at the outest of "Play house 90s" "Galvanized Yan kee," a filmed Civil War yarn last week, a Confederate prison- er is taken out of the prisoner-of-war compound and lined u? in front of a firing squad. "Not him!" howls his brother and fellow prisoner of war (Jam Whitmore). "He's just a kidl'But they mow the kid down anyway. "Ill kill you, Kyper. Somewhere! Somehow!" mutters Whitmore. Right there I thought we were in for a full evening of movie clinches and, if any thing, I underestimated matters. For connoisseurs in this field, tg3 script wa a rare jewel. o o For istance, the embittered Northern commandant limping along on a game leg doesn't ex plain his affliction by anything as simple as: "I got a gimpy leg." He says, of course, "I'm only half a man." And the arguments on ethical and practical grounds which bobbed up ail the time were always prefaced by: "Now you listen to me!" Most of the hour and a half was composed of a cross country tour by a mixture of Northern soldiers and their Southern P.O.W.'s. Just before they ven tre forth on this jaunt, Whit more says: "When Kyper killed my brother, I swore I'd kill him. I swear it again in front of all of you. Kyper will never get to Laramie alive." That provides the theme and you connoisseurs could almost write the script from there on in. For instance, the line: "I'm going to get to Laramie, Shay, be. cause I got to prove one thing that a cripple can be a good sol dier." I kept waiting for that line like waiting for a thunder clap and sure enough it came along. And then there was: "You're not going to get to Laramie, Kyper. The Cheyenne have seen us." And there had to come the moment when the Southern sol diers say: "We don't go one step further unless you give us rifles.', That led inevitably to: "If they don't move in 30 seconds, shoot them." "Jhe exchanges between the Northern and Southern leaders contained some really fragrant ones: "We're both soldiers, Shay. We may have different points of view but we're both soldiers." Then the Northern commandant stiffly telling the Southern P.O.W.: "I want you to help me get the women and children through. I'm not begging for my life, Shay. All I want is your word." "You've got it." Right there you know things are drawing to a climx but they are by no means over. There was time yet for this exchange. "Go ahead and kill me, Shay. I'm not going to crawl." "You want to die, don't you? Youd rather die than go to Lara mie a failure mission not ac complished." "I don't have to kill you, Ky per. You're already dead." The Southerners escape; Ky per gets to Laramie alive in spite of all those dire predictions and heads for the commander to report the escaped Southern ers. "They'll be hunted down like animals," protests the kind ly old doctor. So Kyper takes the blame on his own cliche-ridden shoulders. "Don't try to make a hero of me," he says to the doctor. "That's a word for the battle field. It takes a lot more heroics for a man to remember he's a hu man being," says the doctor warmly. Incidentally, the music follow ed the same timeworn path as the dialogue with all the cliches in the business. There were the stings at each climactic point, the soldier type music, the In dian or why-is-it-so-quiet-around-here type music, the wide open spaces type music with all its swelling chords, charge-of-the-light-brigade type music, the gee, isn't-that-too-bad type music (whenever anyone died) and fi nally, when the two men walked off into the sunset, that old chest nut, "The Battle Hymn of the Re public." Kuchel (R-Calif.), said he feels his fellow Californian, Vice President Richard M. Nixon, is "thoroughly qualified" to repre sent the United States in inter national affairs. Kuchel said he thinks Nixon could "substitute satisfactorily for President Eisenhower if nec essary" at the forthcoming Paris conference or North Atlantic Treaty organization heads of state. The Senator made the state ment recently in a radio program transcribed for broadcast over the Voice of America. He was asked about the possibility that Nixon might "pinch hit" for Eis enhower at the NATO meeting. ' "No one in all our history has ever been more qualified to rep resent this country as a vice president as our present vice president," Kuchel said. He said Nixon has been giving "far more responsibility than any of his predecessors and cer tainly the vice president is em inently qualified, if the Presi dent is unable to represent this country (in Paris), and to supply the leadership and the point of view of our country." The Medical Roundup by Ementni Consultant in Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine. Mayo Foundation Cancer Of The Neck Of The Womb One of the awful things that thousands of women do to them selves is to go for six months or more without seeing a phy sician, after a foul discharge ha s begun to come away from the womb. If only they had gone to a s u r geon the day th e y 4 : 3 i:i ii Dr Alvarer noucea a iiuie U spotting, it might have been easy to cure them. Later, it is difficult or impossible. I was just reading that at the University of Chicago, even in the cases of women whoie cancer of the neck of the woiilb was too far-advanced for surgery, the implantation into the growth of tiny "radium seeds" as they are called (little glass tubes which contain ra dium emanation) enabled 75 per cent of the patients to get well, and they were well five years later. Myasthenia Gravis I was just reading an article by Drs. R. S. Schwab, K. E. Os serman, and J. E. Tether, of Bos ton, New York and Indianapolis, respectively, in which they said that today one of the best treat ments for the great weakness of muscles is with mestinon bro mide or neostingmine bromide in the form of "slow-release tab lets." These slowly - absorbed tablets are particularly helpful at night when they may make it possible for the patient to go through most of the night with out having to be waked to take medicine. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail. IP The in stitute for advanced study here is the only full-time incubator for eggheads on this planet. It provides the elite in the arts and sciences with a place to study, write, think and gab. The 27-year-old institute is unique because it is not a college or research institute, has no for mal curriculum or classes, awards no degrees, has no teach ers in the accepted meaning of the word. With assets of some 21 million dollars, the institute has only one major piece of scientific equipment a computer. The institute owns a square' mile of land southwest of the Princeton university campus, which makes for a cozy relation ship between the two although they are completely separate. A four-story main building, Fuld Hall, is set in the center of an arc like pattern of five brick colonial-style office and seminar buildings. Maintain Einstein Traditions In this setting, where ordinary worldly cares are absent, the heirs of the late Albert Einstein continue to make important dis coveries. Founded in 1930 with a five-million-dollar gift from Newark department store owner Louis Bamberger and his sister, Mrs. Felix Fuld, the institute has two schools: mathematics, devoted to logical analysis, and historical studies, including art, music, ar cheology and literature. One member of the historical studies school got a laugh recent ly when he referred to the math school as "ze uzzer side." A layman visiting the institute soon gets lost trying to follow the 107 temporary members as they ponder the mysteries of na ture and the import of man's handiwork. But it's another story when they relax. Some of the younger physicists and mathematicians play touch football in their spare time. "It's a lot of fun," said a member, "especially in the huddle, when we try to explain a play to the French players." Relax With Chess Other members prefer to relax by flipping plastic flying saucers to one another on the vast lawn. Ping-pong and chess are popular, along with nature walks in the nearby woods. "It's the only place around where there are no blackboards," mused one mem ber near the nature trail. He re ferred to the ubiquitous black board, without which an aver age institute physicist probably would be unable to function. To the members, the greatest feature of the Institute is the fact that it has no schedule, no pressure, no undergraduates. A member can work alone in his office for as many hours a day as he sees fit. Or he can walk across the hall to talk to a col league. He can drop In for talk with Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, institute director for the past 10 years, whose large green-carpeted office in Fuld Hall is always open.
