Meany Denies Deal
With Labor Leaders
Atlantic City, N. J. (IP)
AFL-CIO President George
Meany said there would be "no
deals" with labor leaders ac
cused of corruption charges.
Meany ruled out any last
minute efforts Jto stave off ex
pulsion of - the teamsters and
three smaller unions charged
with corrupt leadership.
In a keynote address to the
opening session of the AFL-CIO
convention, Meany referred to
newspaper accounts that said
he was willing to reach a com
promise on the teamsters' ex
pulsion. "There are no deals," Meany
said to the 1,200 delegates. "We
are not going to compromise on
this evil or any other evil."
The number of working wom
en has risen nearly one million
annually during the past five
years, with women now making
up one-third the nation's work
ing force.

French Premier Wins
Vote of Confidence
Paris OT) Premier Felix
Gaillard won a vote of confi
dence Thursday on a bill giving
him emergency powers to halt
inflation. But a policy split with
the powerful Socialist Party still
threatened the life of his cabi
net. Unofficial results gave the.
government 222 National Assem
bly votes to 185 against. There
were 42 abstentions. The official
results were withheld until the
Assembly convened this after
noon. Gaillard won his vote of con
fidence the third since he was
voted into office a month ago
after a quick double-switch by
the Socialist members of his cabinet.
