Ceramics i3 the art of mak ing articles of y I baked clay such a3 pottery and tiles. And things made of earth enware are ceramics. Webster says Elmer Waizer these are the ways of using the word in singular arid plural. How does this ancient art of pottery puttering fit into space travel and the atomic age? Each Involves soaring temperatures and ceramics can stand them better than other materials. The Fitch Survey describes how ceramics are used as atomic reactor shields, in atomic fuels, for coating of earth satellites, in rocket nozzles, and in parts of Intercontinental ballistic mis siles. Bad Features Ceramics addition to their heat resistance are highly resis tant to corrosion. But they do have bad features, mainly their tendency to shatter and their in ability to bend. The shattering tendency is ov ercome by combining ceramics with metals to form what are called cermats. And some suc cess is reported in making com pounds of ceramics that will bend. High, Heat Resistance Bettinger Corp. has developed ceramic coatings that can with stand temperatures of 2,500 de grees Fahrenheit and up.
