FOURTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, December S, 1957 SPORTS UO Handles Bowl Ducat Applications Eugene IP Officials in the University of Oregon athletic de partment worked almost around the clock today processing a del uge of applications for tickets to the Rose Bowl football game. They mid the first tickets would be in the mail Friday or Saturday, with preference ap plications mailed first. Students weer the first to get their tickets nd the McArthur Court ticket window opened Wednesday for sales at a special student price of S2.75. Students get one ticket apiece, two if they are married. The Ducks" clinched their first Rose Bowl appearance in 38 years and forced the ticket de partment to employ an extra shift of clerical workers to handle the heavy ticket mail. APPLEGATE VALLEY Birds Arrive, Fish Leave Crater Mat Team Wins Central Point All the matches were won by pins Tues day night in wrestling matches which saw Crater defeat Ash land hieh 40 to 25. n Ashland looked good for its first year in wrestling. Crater is starting its second season. The Comets took eight individual matches and Ashland five. Crater was without the serv ices of three of its top perform ers, Charley Warren, Bob Fow ler and Glen Bowles. Those attending are asked to make reservations. o By MAUDE ZIEGLER Applegate Valley A strange sequence of events has occurred among the feathered friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mitchell on Top o' the Hill. The Mitchells have all sorts of bird life around their place this winter owing to the sheltered feeder built by their young son, Jim, in which birds find suet, cereal, peanut butter, cracked corn, or a mixture of all,- flav ored with bacon drippings. Simultaneously gold fish be gan disappearing from the pond near by, and with no tracks nor signs of animal maurauders, the Mitchells were perplexed to find 12 gold fish and two catfish dis appear. One day the family noticed an owl perched on the premises, and to him goes the blame for the missing fish. It is believed that the fish were en dangered owing to a crack in the bottom of the pond, which caused a low water level. Two fish remain. A grosbeak, which ordinarily frequents higher elevations, has been attracted to the sanctuary, as well as several unidentified species. A flock of blue birds has appeared, and Mrs. Mitchell notes that these friends usually leave in September, not to ap pear again until spring. Other visitors include wood peckers, robins, wrens, sparrows, blue jays, juncos and others. Mrs. Mitchell notes that many of the birds get into battles, but the lowly sparrows maintain their peace. Seventy-two pounds of turkey were served at the sixth annual Thanksgiving luncheon held Wednesday noon at Applegate school for 125 guests. Mrs. Una B. Inch, assistant county school superintendent, and Miss Alena Makinen, public health nurse for this area, were invited as were school board members and their wives, including Mr. and Mrs. Francis Krause. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tolle, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Head Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman, and Mr. and 1 Mrs. Lester Hill. Room mothers attended, as well as the teachers and staff. The lnnrheon was Drerjared bv Mrs. Fstella Nelson, cafeteria cook. Pupils presented a musical pro gram after the meal. Mrs. Frank Johnston of Hunt ington Park, Calif., has returned home after spending a week here with her daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Johnston. Mrs. Virginia Hunsaker of Jacksonville assumed duties Monday as an additional teacher at the Ruch school, teaching the sixth and seventh grades. Her husband. Gene Hunsaker, is band instructor at Jacksonville. The couDle came to southern Oregon last vear from Nebraska, where Mrs. Hunsaker taught elemen tary grades at Bird City. She also taught in Wichita and Og den, Kan. Classrooms at Ruch had been overcrowded, school officials said, and the addition of another teacher raises the teaching personnel to six besides the principal. Henry Mapston has returned from Hillsboro, where he was celled by the death of a cousin. Ruch Parent-Teacher associa tion will meet at the school gym Friday, Dec. 6. at 8 p.m., accord ing to Ed Ramsay, president. Band students will be heard, and recreation has been planned around contributions to the school Christmas candy fund. The trees were obtained at Lake creek. Among local college students spending Thanksgiving week end at their homes here are Bill Shannon of Willamette univer sity, and Charles Elmore of Ore gon State college. Jerome Pet erson, formerly active in 4-H work here, where he served as a junior leader, was home on leave from basic training at the naval base at San Diego. He visited his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Daun of Medford. He will leave for the Norman naval aviation school in Oklahoma City for five weeks of basic train ing, after which he will go to Memphis, Tenn., where he will study to become an electronics technician. Lee Port of the state forestry office In Salem visited friends here recently. New people attending the meeting of the ladies' mission ary group of the Ruch Commun ity church Thursday were Mrs. George Laeger of Forest Creek and Mrs. Marion Williams and Mrs. Herbert House of Sterling rd. Mr. and Mrs. George Sample and family went to Klamath Falls to spend Thanksgiving at the home of Sample's brother, Edgar Sample. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Offen bacher of Jacksonville spent Thanksgiving here with Offen bacher's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Offenbacher. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Buck also were among those entertaining with a holiday family dinner. Mrs. Rolland Smith had as Thanksgiving guests her 'brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mc Kee, of Medford. Mrs. Dora Krause went to Portland recently to attend the wedding of her granddaughter, Miss Janet Howard. Mr. and Mrs. Donald O'Brien and son, Mike, of Portland, were early Thanksgiving visitors in the community, and had their holiday dinner Wednesday eve ning at the home of O'Brien's mother, Mrs. Effie Casebolt of Medford. An unusual fire occurred at the Jess Janssen home recently when timbers underneath the fireplace started burning. It was some time before the source of the smoke as located, but little damage was done. Rural reflection: Dana Gear hardt, thoroughly enjoying, the doings of local 4-H people, re calls the time that Mike Elmore, now a third-year 4-H'er and well on his way to the fame that his brothers have reached, was out at the age of three feeding the bummer lambs, dressed in his dad's red hat and coat. Members of the Little Apple gate Knitting club announces that the December meeting has been cancelled, because several members will be busy with other events. Mr. and Mrs. John Horner re cently made a trip to Eugene, where they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cotey. They also visited in Salem. Annual Red Cross solicitations are being made in this commun- Portland Boy Found After Thorough Hunt Portland (IP) Walter R. Kubli Jr., 4, disappeared Wednesday morning. A thorough search of the house failed to locate him and his fam ily finally notified police. A search of the neighborhood fail ed to produce the boy. The family returned to the house to start another search of the premises. Young Walter was found. He had folded himself up in the back 'of the family television set. Dexter Yates, 38, of Othello, Wash., pleaded guilty Wednesday to sec ond degree murder in the hobo jungle slaying last spring of Tul lis Glen Malcolm, 47. The guilty plea came as a sur prise move. Superior' Judge J. Guthrie Langsdorf sentenced Yates to a maximum of 20 years in the state penitentiary at Walla Walla. Yates was arrested In eastern Washington last September and returned to Vancouver for exten sive questioning by Vancouver detectives about the slaying. Malcolm's body was found two or three days after the death at a hobo camp Inside the north city limits. Divers Seek Clues To Plane Wreckage Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. (IP) Divers sought clues today in the sunken wreckage of a B47 Stratojet to help determine what caused the big plane to explode and crash during a practice bombing run overthe water range near here. Three crewmen were presum ed dead in the crash. They were identified by authorities at Mac Dill AFB near Tampa Wednes day night as Lt. Col. Willie P. Gregory, 34, Springfield, Tenn., commander of the plane; 1st Lt. Ronald. R. Farnsley, 25, Jeffer sontown, Ky., pilot, and Lt. Col. Oddie F. Rogers, 37, Central City, Ky., observer. The biggest part of the wreck age was found in about 18 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico off the north "Florida Coast. Planes and ships hunted for sur vivors Wednesday after the plane went down, but without success. The plane was attached to Strategic Air Command units at Macdill and was on a training mission over the bombing range. The Air Force was not able to explain immediately what caus ed the plane to crash. Washington (IP) The Census Bureau reported Wednesday that U. S. exports during October to taled $1,672,000,000, nine per cent higher than September but about the same as the previous October.
