Marvin Madden and his 11-year-old daughter,. Sarah, (right) often play chess together, ad though she has only managed to win once, Mr. Madden says she is giving him more com petition lately. The Madden's other daughter, Theresa, is learning and Mrs. Madden also plays. The set belonged to her father, who lives in England; it is hand-carved and over 50 years old. Mr. Madden, whooperates an insur ance and bookkeeping service in Phoenix, is president of the Democratic Social club. Carpenter, Topsides, is shown here with his father examining one of his recent paintings, a guache titled "Monk." The artist-architect, who designed the new Red Cross building which his parents erected for the' county, came from Waitsfield, Vt., this week to make a final check of the structure which has been in use for the past several weeks. A few minor changes are to be made, and landscaping is to be completed under the direction of Mrs. Fred Lorish. O . . , i When they must stay indoors on cold winter days, the two children of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Shute enjoy books. Patricia, in the second grade, is shown here reading to her favorite doll while her little brother, Jeffrey II, listens or occupies himself with a picture book. The Shutes moved last week from their former home on Haven street to one on Old Military road and Patricia will enter West Side school Monday. When summertime comes the two children will have plenty of space in "which to roam and play for the Shutes now have seven acres, including a large private fish pond stocked with fish. - Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Shute who moved last week, plan to spend a lot of time these winter evenings with garden books and seed catalogs. Mrs. Shute, Oregon State college graduate and member of American Association of Uni versiltPWomen,. has been chairman of the branch's annual art show for two years. Her husband, who attended both OSC and University of Oregon, is on the staff of Robert Keeney, Medford, architect, and assisted Mrs. Shute with the. art show both years. fAr. Shute likes to fish and Thanksgiving day caught two from the private pond t j on this new acreage. Mrs. Freeman, member of American Association of -University Women, is co- chairman of the branch's music group. O . O The Charles Freemans have a record collection and play and often fill their honT) with fine music. Here Mr. Freeman and their younger son, hnny, 3, decide wjicfi selection they will play next. Mr. Freeman is with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and the family came here from Pendleton, Ore., a year ago. Both Mr. fcnd Mrs. (-eeman are University of Wisconsin graduates; she is a registered nurse. The fam ily home is ot 3365 Hollywood avenue. Pll TNt L t WSmSmXm p-CC V O Dr. Frank Roberts Sr. is spending almost every evening with rehearsals for Footlighters' winter play, "The Wooden Dish." Dr. Roberts, who came to Medford on St. Patrick's day 57 years ago, has never been in a play before,' but Director Richard Graham says he is doing well in the role of 78-year-old Pop Dennison, a war veteran. The play, orig inally scheduled to open this week, has been delayed by illness of cast members and j. will run instead December 10-14. o Q
