My wife and I are cize my wife. MRS. M. D. I would like to help her. RALPH D. M wife and I are a very happily married couple, or we would be If it weren't that my parents make trouble between us. Don't get me wrong. I love my parents very much and think they're swell people, but because I am an only child, they dote on me a little too much and al ways seem to think that my wife can't take as good care of me as they can, or something like that. They constantly make little remarks about my not look ing well and tell my wife what kind of food I should be eating and that she should see that I get more rest. My parents feel they aren't saying anything of importance when they say these things, but I know my wife feels hurt, al- - 50-Year Contrail Signed For Power Portland OP) Two local pri vate power companies announced today they have signed 50-year contracts to purchase 23.1 per cent of the power from the Rocky Reach dam on the Colum bia river. The dam is scheduled to put power on the line in 1961. The dam is being constructed by the Chelan county, Wash., Public Utlity district. The local firms buying power are Pacific Power and Light and Portland General Electric. Contracts with Puget Sound Power and Light and Washing ton Water Power companies and with Aluminum company of America will take the rest of the power from the dam, the announcement said. The project will have an initial capacity of 775.000 kilowatts. Puget Sound Power and Light will get 50 per cent of the out put; Alcoa 23 per cent; PGE 16 per cent; PP&L 7.1 per cent and WWP 3.9 per cent. Officials of the two Portland firms said that with new proj ects they have under construc tion in Washington and Oregon the purchase of Rocky Reach power will assure more than 1, 000,000 kilowatts of new power supplies. PP&L and PGE serve a total of 496.263 customers in Oregon and PP&L serves 83,835 others in Washington, Idaho and Montana. Rocky Reach dam is located seven miles upstream from Wenatchee, Wash. Community College Proposed al Coos Bay Coos Bay (ID State Sen. R. F. Chapman said today he has proposed formation of a com munity college district to con sist of Coos and Curry counties and part of Douglas county. The proposal was made to a group of businessmen and school officials meeting with William G. Loomis, state supervisor of trade and in dustrial education. The Southwestern Oregon Community College association, headed by George M. Peterson, already has presented petitions signed by more than 10 per cent of registered voters in the North Bend. Coos Bay, Sunny Hill and Charleston school dis tricts. Petersen said petitions were also being circulated in other districts which might be joined to the proposed college district. The jdint meeting of school districts which might join the district will be held Dec. 6 to consider recommendations based on the petitions. At present, Oregon's only com munity college is at Bend. though she has never said a word about it. MRS. M. D. Ralph has hurt us deeply by saying we make trouble between him and his wife. Maybe we do dote on him but we love him too much to do anything to cause him unhappi ness in his married life. Just the same, parents can't help seeing things. We can see that Ralph's wife isn't really do ing all a woman should to make him happy and comfortable. She doesn't seem to know a thing about diet and nutrition and Ralph has a tendency to be un derweight and is easily tired. I, personally, feel that Ralph's wife did not get the right train ing from her mother and I would like to help her if she would only give me the chance. I don't see how anyone can call that inter ference. THE COUNCIL: While "par ents can't help seeing things," they often must discipline them selves to pretend that they don't see them. Mrs. M. D. may feel she is treading on fairly neutral ground when she discusses diet and homemaking with' her daughter-in-law, but she is really in dangerous territory. Most wo men, consciously or unconscious ly, consider cooking and home making as one of the most im portant ways in which they ex press love to their husbands and usually manage somehow to handle these jobs fairly well even though they haven't gotten the training.. Criticism the way this job is handled implies an accusation of lack of care and affection. In this case, we don't know how the wife feels about this, but it is assumed that she gets the point. In any case, Ralph gets it, and if he has some sense of a lack of love in his marriage, the criticism may hurt him more than his wife. These parents can't remedy the situation by calling atten tion to such matters. It may be something that Ralph and his wife will work out as time goes on, and the parents can only sit tight and hope for the best. Someday Ralph's wife may sur prise his mother by coming to her for help and advice. Then she should give it freely, but without any implied criticism. Copyright 1957, General Features . Corp.) Politicians doubt it can be done but some government offi cials believe President Eisen hower's illness makes it essential that Stevenson go to the Paris conference to demonstrate American unity. Hopes Kept Alive White House press secretary James C. Hagerty kept hopes alive that Eisenhower might at tend the Dec. 16-18 "summit" meeting. He said Thursday the President's doctors "will decide later" on whether he can make the trip! Hagerty said the Chief Executive would send Nixon in his Dlace if he could not eo. Stevenson has not said he will or won't go with Eisenhower or Nixon. His position before the President's illness was that his plans would depend primarily on whether he could agree with administration proposals to tighten allied unity in the face of Russia's scientific-technical advances. Difficulty Foreseen Because he has now set up a sort of bipartisan headquarters in the State Department it will be difficult for Stevenson to say he won't go if asked, some ob servers believe. The President and Stevenson, his twice-defeated Democratic presidential opponent, had many uncomplimentary things to say about each other in the 1952 and 1956 campaigns. But Nixon and Stevenson .swapped laps which poltical observers close to both believe were more heartfelt. New Product From Wood Waste Listed Pullman OPi A new product created from wood waste has been developed at Washington State college. It is called flapreg, and re searchers say it may prove a strong stimulant to this country's lumber industry. It looks like brown marble, shines like glass, is tough and is adaptable for building every thing from golf club heads to counter tops. Preliminary tests have already proved the mater ial's worth. Developers of flapreg expect that the new board eventually will be used in place of certain other composition materials now being made with expensive" ve neers. In strength and quality it has the properties of board made with veneers but, because flakes are used, it is easier, quick and cheaper to produce. The flakes can be made from wood that is now sawmill waste. There are other types of compo sition board made with flakes but all are different from flapreg in properties. WSC reasearchers discovered a method to apply more of the resin, or glue to the flakes and still keep them from Becoming a sticky mess, and this proved to be the key factor in the product's development. By EUGENE BURNS Ranger-Naturalist The Scorpion, which may be the first land animal judging from fossil finds, is immortal ized in our Signs of the Zodiac as the symbol of November, and in our heavens by Scorpio the "accursed constellation," omin ous of war, discord, and woe. Although few have died from the poison in its lashing tail, it is rivaled alone by the snake in man's awesome regard for it. In fact, one might say the large Mexican state of Dur ango which features the scorp ion in its state seal is the world's scorpion capital and Durango has an ugly, vicious one, black as jet, measuring six inches from snout to stinger, and it packs a lethal dose in its skewer. Essentially Alike All scorpions are essentially alike from the shining black, eight-inch specimen which in fests the tropical jungles of Africa, to the thin, pale one-inch fellows vhich live in sandy wastes. All have an abdomen ending in a tail-like whip armed with a curved stinger at the tip. All tend to be nocturnal, com ing out during night-time to search for prey which they catch in their pincer-jaws and if they are too big to hold, anaesthetize them with a jolt of strychnine like poison. All are antisocial; as soon as the young abandon their mother's back, each goes his sep arate way. Two are found to gether only when they meet for courtship a courtship frequent ly culminated by the femal de vouring the male.
