We're going to lick you in the classroom." Few Americans were prepared Irr 1955 to take this Soviet boast seriously. The U.S. school system, despite its "temporary" shortages of space and faculty, was widely regarded then as the best in the world. Russia was credited with a few good techni cal schools but Its overall educa tional system was considered rather primitive. Complacency Rudely Shaken Three recent developments have shaken rudely such Ameri can complacency: 1. Disclosure that Russia Is training far more scientists and spotted Gotf Pood at yosir grocers now engineers than the United States. Russian schools graduate 60,000 engineers a year to our 34,000; 8,000 Ph. D.'s in science to our 6,000. 2. Sputniks I and II blasted any notion that Russia is sacrific ing quality for quantity in technical education. 3. A U.S. Office of Education report showed that Russian stu dents work much longer and harder, and receive far more in tensive training in science, mathematics and languages, than American students. President Eisenhower had all of these facts in mind when he said in his Nov. 14 broadcast that strengthening U.S. schools is "the most critical problem" confronting the nation in its rade with Russia for scientific and military supremacy. Scientists Echo President The President's warning since has been echoed by leading sci entists and educators and by millions of parents who were concerned about the state of our schools long before Sputnik I and II. While everyone seems to agree that America needs better schools, a United Press survey disclosed a wide range of views on the kind of improvements most urgently needed. Some critics are calling for drastic reforms in the content and philosophy of American edu cation. They say high school and college curriculums must be MARKET 420 Pine St. Centrafl Point, (Ore. CLOSED THANKSGIVING overhauled from top to bottom They would restore emphasis to solid intellectual achievement and the teaching of basic sub jects not only math and science, but also history, geo graphy, foreign languages, Eng lish grammar and literature. Rear Adm. H. G. Rickover, a noted atomic scientist, said "scholastic standards" must be raised sharply at every level of U.S. education. He contends they have become so lax that the average American college gradu ate has less read education than a graduate of European high schools. i Teachers Turn Deaf Ear Mortimer Smith, executive secretary of the Council for Basic Education, said U.S schools are dominated by pro fessional educators who turn a deaf ear to all outside criticism These professors he said, are so bemused by their "life-adjust ment" theories of education that they have "lost sight of the real functions of a school to pre sent an organized body of knowledge and teach children to use their minds effectively. Millions of American youths, says Smith, are being taught to "drive cars, weave baskets, choose mates, and behave grace fully at a 'party' when they should be learning to solve quadratic equations, conduct ex periments in organic chemistry, or parse a sentence." Professional eduactors say these criticims are intemperate and unfair. Most acknowledge a need for some curriculum "ad justments" to increase emphasis on science, mathematics, and other basic studies. But they op pose sweeping changes which would upset the "balance" of American education or deprive students of freedom to choose courses which meet their indivi dual "life needs." Greater Solidariiy Asked By Adenauer Amsterdam, The Netherlands (IP) West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer called Satur day for greater "solidarity" be tween western Europe and the United States to meet the threat of Communist missile-age aggres sion. Adenauer told the first meet ing of the "European cultural foundation" that the "common support of freedom' was bring ing Europe together against "those forces which deny the rights of free self-determination to individuals and peoples." But he reminded his listeners "with gratitude" that Europe did not stand alone. "If feelings of solidarity with Europe had not been so lively in American" he said, "free Eu rope would also have become a victim of eastern forces, and would by now have been an his torical idea. "We should clearly recognize that it will be our task to deep en the profound relations . . . existing between our conti nents," he said. The foundation opened its two-day meeting under the pres idency of Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands. Adenauer shared Saturday's speakers' plat form with NATO secretary-general Paul Henri Spaak. Spaak stressed the progress made by the European unity movement in the past five years. Indianapolis (IP) An in mate of the Marlon county jail has been returned after a prize winning journey outside prison walls. Pete, a gray and black striped cat, won $2 Saturday in the household pet class of the Hoosier Cat Fanciers Show. CHOKEDGAS? Why do vegeterians make a point of holding a Thanksgiving day dinner. The answer is pro vided by Mrs. Meta Ferreira, secretary of the society. "We vegetarians don't want to go to our families and make them feel uncomfortable our selves, so we get together as one big family, young and old, and partake of nature's vegeta ble gifts." What is a lentil roast? Well, says Mrs. Ferreira, you put the lentils through a liquefier and they come out in a consistency similar to that of baby food and then through some process known to the chef they are molded into a roast that can be cut when cooked. Word has oozed back east that a peppermint-striped toothpaste is being test-marketed in a mid dle western area. The report is the striping is accomplished with tiny plastic containers built into the neck of the tube. They stripe the paste with a red, mint-flavored dye as you squeeze. If this stuff tastes as good as it sounds, there could be a ten dency among small fry not only to brush after every meal but to make a meal out of every brush. Paul Gilbert, the filthy capi talist who used Communist sat ellite radio waves to trigger the apparatus that lighted up a big hew elecric billboard advertis ing liquor in Manhattan, hears that a Societ publication has called his action unfair. What Gilbert did was hitch the first Russian Sputnik to some old - fashioned American publicity ingenuity. He used the short wave gadgets of the RCA communications receiving sta tion at Riverhead, N.Y., to pick up the beep-beep signals of Sputnik I and let them activate the splash of light that was the sign's debut. A public relations man, Gil bert was seeking to call atten tion to a new brand of Scotch whisky. Numerous newspaper editorials later applauded his ingenuity but now he hears that Pravda, the organ of the Com munist party, disapproves. He says that if it'll make them any happier, he'll be glad to use any future Sputnik signals to light a vodka sign. MANAGERS!
