Newspaper Page TextMed Treasure by ZD Lp1 Alertness Important for Collector of Old Coins The Arkansas Centennial half dollar was in mint condition. It lay on a little piece of cotton batting just bove a price tag that read $10. "May I see that, please the Arkansas half. That's it." Frank pointed out the coin in a show case that held half a hundred odds and ends that had only their location in common. The young woman running the place carefully removed the piece and set it on the counter. Frank causually turned it over, scrutinized it briefly and turn ed it back again. "I ll take it' he said, fishing out his billfold and extracting .a ten-spot. I was on the point of saying that he was paying well over the top price for the piece but suddenly thought better of it. If he didn't know enough now, after years of collecting, it might do him good to have to pay through the nose for once. COIN PATTERN PIECES RARE; CANDLESTICK EVEN RARER If you ever come across any glassware with a coin design on it, give plenty of thought to it before passing it up. But if it happens to be a candlestick, take twice as much time. There is a marked premium value on all coin glass, but can dlesticks happen to be among the very rarest pieces of this type. A friend of mine got a pair of them some months ago and for only $2. The reason that he bought them, furthermore, was that he merely wanted some candlesticks to use and chose those because they struck him as odd. They were not particularly at tractive to look at. They were ten Inches high and of clear glass. Their general design and shape were both completely un distinguished. They were even miCE OF OLD MAGAZINES RECOUPED BY STAMP FIND Jack knew what he was do ing when he gave $100 for 500 serial copies of Harper's Maga zine, starting in 1862. "I don't intend to read all of them," he said, "but there's a lot of good stuff in those pages, and It will be handy to have them available when I want them." That was a little over two years ago. When I saw him a couple of weeks ago I asked if he were still happy with his buy. "Best I ever made," he said. "Look at this." From his coat pocket he pro duced an envelope. Out of that he shook half of another, or rather the half of the front of a stamped envelope, the half with the stamp on it. "I found this in one of the 1876 numbers," he said. "It had been used as a page marker." The stamp was an embossed, 30-cent item, with a classical bust, in profile, left, . of Alex ander Hamilton. The color was black and cream. The cancella , tion mark, I noticed, was quite clear, showing that the envelope Tarnished Plant Bug Being Conquered ... Geneva, N.Y. (IP) The tarn ;v ished plant bug, one of the com monest and most troublesome pests in the insect world, at long past is being conquered by science. F. G. Mundinger, entomolo gist at Cornell University's New York State Experiment Station here, reports that development of newer types of pesticides is slowly bringing about control of the bug, an omniverous feeder that is found on almost any kind of plant. Mundinger noted that fruit trees, berries and many flower ing plants are favorite grounds of the extremely active pests, which leave misshapen and dis colored fruits as evidence of their work. The scientist, who reported there may be four or more gen erations of the bug in one sea son, explained that early con trol measures were mostly, pre ventive by'growing plants under cloth cakes or houses. But research has brought about new types of pesticides, said Mundinger, and effective control is being obtained with applications of DDT, dieldrin, TEPP, malathion and other materials. WRONG TARGET Mary Ann Hoopiiaina, 17, who backed her car slowly from a driveway to avoid hitting some garbage cans, was forced to call the water department when the "You think I paid too much," he said, once we were outside. I admitted it. He laughed and handed me the little box. "Take another look at the coin." I studied the piece carefully, turning it this way and that. Just as I was about to hand it back, it dawned on me that while the date 1936 was given on the face of the coin, the date on the re verse, at the very bottom under the denomination, was 1939. Furthermore, there was a tiny D nearby, the Denver mint mark. I pointed to the mint mark. "That's it," Frank said. And then he went on to tell me that the Arkansas Centennial halves were minted in Denver, San Francisco and Philadelphia mints each year from 1936 to 1939 inclusive. But in the last year only a total of 2,000 were minted, and the value of just one of those they were usually sold in sets of three, one from each mint is at least $25. ON common looking except for the fact that the stick, for four inch es above where it joined the round base, was square in sec tion. And each of the four faces was ornamented with the frost ed replica of a ten-dollar gold piece of 1866. That date in itself was some thing unusual, of course. For while almost any coin with a date prior to 1890, but not farth er back than the early 1800's, may be found in coin glass, the majority of such pieces have a date late In the century. It didn't take my friend long to discover the value of the two pieces after he bought them. He was alerted when an acquaint ance tried to buy them from him for $10. He became suspicious and looked the matter up. His suspicions were amply justified. They were worth from $125 to $200 for the pair. had been mailed in New York in December, 1875. But there was something odd about the piece. At first, I could n't detect it and then I saw what it was. The general design of the stamp and the engraving of the die from which it had been made were both so poor as to be actually sloppy. In the center of each of the long sides of the oval frame was the figure 30 in a little box. The one on the left was level enough but that on the right was definitely cocked. I called it to Jack's at tention. "That's one of the very things that makes this stamp easy to spot," lie exclaimed. "This hap pens to be a so-called Plimpton issue, a very poor copy of a fine old stamp by a new contractor. A legal one, of course, done at the order of the Post Office. In this particular combination of colors, and with this date and denomination, it's rare enough to be worth around sixty dollars." And that is the price he got for it a few days later. The device measures, counts and classifies the time of flight of neutrons from a nuclear re actor. It is said to .accomplish in an hour what it previously would have taken a man a month to do. Elmer J. Wade and Donald S. Davidson of the laboratory developed the device, called an analyzer. According to the United States Savings and Loan League, near ly nine of every 10 homes built today is of this type. Only six per cent are of the newer split-level design, and only four per cent are two-story structures. The league said the public is demanding a bigger and better house, as evidence 'by increases in the size of new homes. It said the average floor area of today's new house is in excess of 1,230 square feet, compared with 1,170 in 1955 and 1,140 in 1954. Income Taxes Being Levied by Some Cities Chicago (IP) Local income taxes now are being levied and withheld from wages, salaries and commissions by scores of city governments in four states, a survey shows. The survey was made by Com merce Clearing House, national reporting authority on tax and business law. Legislatures of Kentucky, Mis souri, Ohio and Pennsylvania have empowered taxing officials of local jurisdictions to assess and withhold at the source taxes on net income earned. These taxes now are levied in 13 important cities and many suburban and smaller communi ties, the survey showed. The cities include: Canton, Cincinn ati, Columbus, Dayton, Spring field, Toledo and Youngstown, Ohio; Erie, Pittsburgh, Philadel phia and Scranton, Pa.; Louis ville, Ky., and St. Louis, Mo.
