STUDY OF EPILEPSY
Neil Bertram, of the Michigan
Epilepsy center in Detroit, was
just telling me about an idea

me much.
Each summer
for 10 weeks
the center
sends around

rents that are constantly being
formed in the brain, and causes
them to record themselves on

I think it is wonderful to have
the machine sent around through
the stafe because each month,

of possibly epileptic children
who wish they could get an elec
troencephalogram made, but are
unable to take the child to a
distant city, or if they could af
ford to travel would'nt know
where to go or they could not
pay the fee of 30 or 40 dollars.

they might have.

Minister Is Transferred

Pense will preach his last ser
mon in Phoenix Sunday night
at the Church of Christ. He has
been transferred to a church in
Cottage Grove, Ore.
The Rev. Kenneth Arnold of
Paradise, Calif., will arrive with
his familv about the first of
December to fill the position left
by the Rev. Pense. Mr. Arnold
will deliver his first sermon at
the church Dec. 8.

since early fall.

With the death of Clard Smith
Phoenix lost one of its' oldest
residents. Mr. Smith had carried
the mail from the train to the
post office for 11. years until
the discontinuance of the train
over two years ago and had been
watermaster for the town about
the same length of time during
the 1920's and 1930's.

students has also been confusing
the mathematicans.

answers," Dr. Karl Menger,
mathematics professor at Illi
nois Institute of Technology,
said. "And since that letter oc
cures on practically every page
in every mathematical text, there
is confusion all the way up and
down the line.
"The language, of mathema
tics, from algebra on, is in need
of a thorough classification," he
said. "Its presentation to begin
ners must be changed if the ex
pected large numbers of stu
dents are to learn the basic
mathematics ideas."
Menger proposes to formulate
clear rules for the use of all
mathematical symbols, especial
ly the letters "x" and "y",
through a three-year study grant
from the Carnegie Corp. of
New York.

Be Controlled Soon
Riverside, Calif. OP) The
corn ear worm, one of the most
serious agricultural pests, may
soon be controlled because of its
weakness for the color yellow.
This pest to sweet and field
corn likes all bright colors, but
of nine variously colored cloths
tested it was most partial to the
yellow. Knowing this weakness,
researchers may be able to
develop a trap or a bait for kill
ing the corn ear worm or at
least for luring it away from its
prey.
At present hand-applied DDI
controls the pest, but it is too ex
pensive to be used extensively.
