o BIGHT JIEDFOHB (OREGON) eaverton lashe n ate in o Beaverton Beaverton high's busy Beaverg, No. 1 and No. 4 nfnked in Oregon prep polls, cutraced and oiitdefensed the Black Toronado o Medford in O theo early going here Saturday night and capitalized on the breaks at the finish to gnaw their wy into a berth in the state Class A-l semi-finals. O Spurred by the running of Halfbacks Mickey Sinnerud and Jim Mackey, the passing of Quarterback Mike McGettigan, good blocking in the line and fturdy defense, the Beavers earned their spot with a 19 to 0 quarterfinal decision over the District 6 representative from jjedford. The District 3 titlists and Metropolitan league champions of coach Duke Moore, barging to their ninth straight triumph of the season, fought to a touch- down in the second quarter on their second march of the game. Then they took advantage of a Medford fumble and bad center q pass to salt the victory in the closing stanza. O Sinnerud Scores Twice Sinnerud, who packed the ball 16 times for 105 yards, dur ing the course of the game, cored two of the three touch downs. He crossed the goal on 11-yard pass play, with Mc Gettigan throwing, for the open ing score. In the fourth period, when it appeared that Medford had the .Beavers halted, Sinne rud broke free for a 33-yard romp to the goal. McGettigan punched three yards for the concluding TD. Fullback Steve Beguin had toed the extra point fter the opening score. Beaverton threatened on two other occasions, getting to the Tornado 14 yard line on one occasion and reaching the 23 on another. Medford, not up to its stellar performances of mid season, never got a real long drive going but made one strong bid by going to the Beaver five after Fullback Larry Brown's pass interception brought the chance. The ball was lost on downs. Time caught up with the only other serious Tornado bid. Coach Fred Spiegelberg's Medford team was on the Beaverton 31 when the final gun went off. Action tightened after the Beaver's initial touchdown with each club finding the going rough on the slippery high crowned field against the de fense of the other. Penltie Hurt Penalties and bad breaks as ell n the stout resistence of thg horn eleven kept the Black Toronado of the south from gen erating a consistent storm. Beaverton had its penalties and infractions, too, but was more 4piccessful in shaking off its tribulations and capitalizing on the misfortune's of its adver sary. Beaverton, after taking the opening kick-off, controlled the ball for almost the entire first quarter. The Black Toronado had possession for only one series of four downs. It got the pigskin on Jim Funston's interception of McGettmgan s pass after the Beavers had marched from their own 26-yard line 60 yards to the Medford 14. Medford moved the ball out to the 19 where Quarterback Tony Brauner punted. The Beavers took over on the Med ford 45 and in eight plays had their touchdown. A personal foul flagged against the Torna do helped the cause of the Metro champs and that infraction was O offset only slightly by an out side caH against Beaverton. lfcin Called Back Sinnerud boomed through the middle and ramble 19 yards to the goal on the play on which the offside was charged. After the nullification the Beavers were put on the 25. By the end of the first period the ball was on the Medford four. Sinnerud was dumped back on the 11 as the second canto began but on the next try McGettigan hit him with an aerial on about the five-yard line. The star half back blasted into the end zone after the catch and Beguin thumped the bonus. Another Beaverton threat came in short order when the Tornado, after taking the kick-off. failed to make a yard for a first down on a fourth down gamble. That gave the Beavers the pighide on the Med ford 42. TRey got to the Toro nado 19 but were penalized to the 33 for illegal use of the . hands and finally lost the ball on downs on the Medford 24. Medford got out to the 39 and lost back to the 35. Then came one of the standout feats of the night as Quarterback Brauner booted a long punt which got a good roll. It stopped on the Beaver four-yard line, good for 61 yards, and set the stage for the most serious bid of the evening by the Tornado. Medford Stopped on Five Beaverton worked to a first O down on its 28 then lost to the 26. A McGettigan pass was in complete and another heave was snared by Tornado Full back Larry Brown who toted from the Beaver 48 to the 34. MAIL TRIBUNE A-1 IFootbal Halfback Ron Reich connect ed with Brauner on a pitch-pass play good for 20 yards to the 14 for first down. Brown smash ed to the 10, but Halfback Johnny Jones lost to the 12. Halfback Ron Reich made it to the eight and Jones on fourth down got to the five just one yard short of a first down and with 10 seconds left in the half. Beaverton, in possession of the ball, snapped for one play before the intermission gun. Beaverton got near the Med ford goal early in the third panel, when Sinnerud inter cepted a Brauner pass at mid field and ran to the Tornado 25. Six plays carried to the Medford 10 where the ball was lost on downs. Reich Runs 50 After Beaverton was held for only a yard gain and Beguin punted, Medford had the ball on its 20. In two plays the ball was advanced to the 41 but clip ping put the Medforites back on their 26. They gained to the 28 but lost to the 23 and kicked. The Tornado appeared on the move at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth but ran afoul of a penalty and an interception. Taking the ball on its five, Medford had three carries and the help of a Beaverton five-yard infraction in getting to the 26 when the third stanza ended. Halfback Skip Bennett crack ed to the 34. Next the Toronado shook Reich loose on the weak side play and he packed for 50 yards to the Beaverton 14. But Medford was charged with clip ping on a questionable infrac tion and after the penalty was stepped off the ball was put on the Medford 43 for a net gain of nine yards. Halfback Gerry Lyons was held at the line of scrimmage but Halfback Bob Gee advanced to the 46.. Brauner cast an aer ial intended for End Mike Rus sell but the ball was gathered in by Sinnerud on the Beaver 25 and he ran up to his 42. Medford held Beaverton for a net of three yards and Beguin punted. On the runback Med ford hopes first soared and then were dashed. Jones took the ball on the Tornado 15, faked to Lyons and headed toward the right side line. He tight-roped his way behind some fine downfield blocking 85 .yards to the end zone! The squeeze was . too tight down the side stripe for the Tornado ball carrier, how ever. An officials flag went down on the Medford 31 where Jones had been forced to step on the line and cancelled out his long run. Had Jones' run counted and touchdown resulted and had the bonus point been scored, the Tornado not only would have tied the game but would have been in front in total net yard age. Instead Dame Fortune worked for Beaverton. A Med ford fumble on the next play was recovered on the 26-yard line by End Rich Kipp of the Beavers. Sinnerud Goes Over The home team made the most of the chance. Sinnerud gained to the 20. A hands infraction put the Beavers back on the 36. Beguin got to the 33. Then Sin nerud smacked over right tackle, cutback through the Medford secondary and angled for the goal. Score was 13 to 0 and stayed that way when Beguin's conversion kick was low and wide. Medford had the ball on Its 27 after the kick-off but was back to the 25 after three plays. Brauner went back to punt. The center snap was high and the quarterback, trying to run, was caught on the 15. It was Beaverton's ball on downs and, the Metro titlists were equal to another scoring opportunity. McGettigan speak ed to the 10 and Jim Mackey bucked to the three. Then Mc Gettigan went the rest of the way. In one final scoring effort Medford surged from its 37 for 32 yards to the Beaverton 31 where time ran out and the final gun sounded. Gee at Halfback Gee, who has shared the full back chores with Brown this San Francisco Far West Victor By UNITED PRESS San Francisco State held the Far Western conference football title today thanks to an all-pur pose fullback named Bod Rod- rigo who was the wnoie snow in Saturday's 23-6, victory over Chico State.
