TEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRI3UNE Monday, November 18. 1957 Khrushchev-Says Russia Has Won World Rocket, Missile Superiority BY HENRY SHAPIRO United Press Correspondent Moscow 0? Nikita Khrush chev Friday claimed that the So viet Union has won absolute orld rocket and missip super iorly but he said the Soviets "will never start a war." In the event of another war, he said it would be "fought on the American continent," but "we too would suffer immense ly." In an exclusive two and one half hour interview with the United Press, the Soviet party chief exponded freely on world problems as he saw them and made these major points: Prospects -for preserving world peace "aren't bad"1 but the possibility cannot be ex cluded that World War III might be started by "some lunatics." There probably won't be any summit meeting with the West in the nearest future, though he still wants one as "the only way out" of the East-West impasse. It would be possible for Rus sia and the U.S. alone to settle major problems in bilateral negotiations. "If were two agree to relax international tensions, other countries won't be offended." Said the Soviet Union alone posseses an intercontinental bal listic missile. Said the first rocket launch ed by the Soviet Union "hit the bullseye" and Russia could now use rockets to disose of bases in Europe, Asia and Africa." If the Americans doubt So viet claims in rocketry, "Let's have a peaceful rocket contest just like a rifle shooting match and they'll see for themselves. Said that a third world war would not necessarily mean the end of mankind but that it would mean the death of capi talism and the triumph of Com munism. The emergence of another Stalin and the development of a new cult of personality in the Soviet Union is now impossible. Former Soviet defense chief Marshal Georgi Zhukov was re moved by the Presidium and the Central Committee, not by the generals. He was "very rude and dictatorial" but no Stalin "or even half a Stalin." First Such Interview Khrushchev, in the first Inter view he has ever given to resident Moscow correspondent, claimed flatly that the Soviet Union now enjoys "absolute rocket superiority." He said that if attacked, the Russians could wipe out all bases of the North Atlantic Treaty Or ganization and deliver a mortal blow on continental U.S. However, he said, "the pros pects for peace aren't bad" due to a recent change in the balance of strength in favor of the Com munist and neutral countries and the rising clamor for peace among the European as well as the American people who do not want war. But he said the possibility of war could not be excluded. He said it might be started by some Supersonic Bailout Sought for Pilots China Lake, Calif. Ingrid Bergman Goes Out With Millionaire London (CI Ingrid Bergman was out on the town with Swed ish millionaire Lars Schmidt three times this week end. Miss Bergman, separated from Roberto Rossellini two weeks ago, has been linked romantical ly with the wealthy Swede al though she has dismissed as "just nonsense" reports that she might marry him. Today it was learned that since his arrival here last week on what he called a business trip they have been seeing each oth er constantly. Miss Bergman was asked about Schmidt when she stopped 0 off in Paris en route here from Rome to make a picture. "Of course I know him," she said, "but reports that we might marry are completely without foundation." Schmidt and Miss Bergman went to the theater three times over the week end. The Rus sians and Syrians attempted . to further their case in the United Nations but the U.N. took no ac tion. - Expanding on his theme, Khru shchev said: "I don't think we have a pre war situation now," adding "that an artificial war psychosis is be ing created abroad, especially by U. S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. But they won't succeed in making war. The bal ance of strength 'is against them. Even Dulles knows that, and he is. afraid of his own 'bink of war' policy." At any rate, he reeated several times, "the Soviet Union will never start a war." Sputnik I Rocket May Be Visible Soon . The rocket of Sputnik I may be visible over the United States in about 11 more days. Scientists at Smithsonian As trophysical' observatory predict the rocket may make its next American appearance about three days before Dec. 1. Its death date was set for around Dec. 11. Smithsonian a s t r ophysicists checking'' from throughout the world established "reasonable proof" that the first satellite is orbiting the earth in three parts, the rocket, the sphere and a third object thought to be the rocket nose cone. Success May Be Soon Dr. James Judin, boss of the Naval Ordnance Research Track SNORT here, says "success may be just around the corner." High speed cameras and tele metering equipment have un covered evidence, still classified, that a successful supersonic bail out system may be developed soon. Crux of the problem lies in the fact the ejected pilot has to break the sound barrier with his body. Even at slower speeds he is shot out like a human cannon ball into hostile 'space and may begin tumbling violently with death the outcome. Scientists here are studying ways to reduce fatalities and are plainly worried at the high death rate. 80 Per Cent Fatal Judin says that "while pro gress is being made in the de velopment of bailouts from high performance aircraft," he admits "this work has not kept up with the development of the planes themselves." "As yet no aircraft ejection system has been proven" that will be a sure thing to save the pilot's life. "Eighty per cent of supersonic bailouts fail," he said. It was high speed that killed the man who was the world's fastest human before he was killed in the X2 crash. Capt. Milburn G. Apt was reported flying more than 2,000 miles an hour when his plane suddenly disintegrated. He was able to eject the tiny capsule in the nose of the plane, but he was trapped inside and plummeted to earth.. Defects Discovered Tests are underway here on five different escape systems. Man-like dummies are catapult ed from the rocket-powered suJ personic SNORT sled while high speed cameras track their path of flight. Judin says that already defects have been discovered and that corrective action taken in ejection systems now in use has resulted in the saving of several pilots lives. Judin says through his work with SNORT he has been able to put his finger on many of the trouble areas causing pilot deaths. Cockpit obstruction may fatal ly impede the pilot's ejection if part of his body or chute are caught on 'a sharp object. "De bris from canopies striking the man and premature release of parachutes," can also be fatal, Judin says. "Seat breakup from aerody namic forces" has also accounted for unsuccessful bailouts, ac cording to Judin. One especially designed ejec tion seat by Convair is shaped like a bob-sled. Before the pilot ejects, he is thrown over on his back and is catapulted face up wards out of the plane into the air. The curved "runners" pro vide a smoother entry into the air and more lift for the pilot to clear the knife-sharp tail sec tion. It is an eerie "sleigh ride" in a tornadic wind.
