rOUTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBXTNE Sunday. TTotnber 17. 1957 G Crater Lake Area Council Sets Goal of 1,000 More Boy Scouts A eoal of 1,000 more boys in Scouting by the end of 1958 was set by J. A. McDougall In the principal address to near ly 200 persons at the annual meeting of the Crater Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America, recently at the Rogue Valley Country club, Medford. McDougall was elected presi dent of the three-county Scout Council at a business meeting. The Council includes Jackson, Josephine, and Siskiyou coun ties. "More and more boys are available." McDougall said. "Our long-range plan tells us this, our school census tells us . this, and we know by seeing the boys about us that this is true. To meet our responsibility, we must fill up the Scout units that need more boys, and, incidently, we must improve the program in those units; and we must or ganize 40 more Scout units by the end of 1958." $iliT Beaver Award A highlight of the recognition banquet was the presentation of three Silver Beaver awards for distinguished service to boyhood to B. Sam Taylor of Medford, A. L- Morford of Yreka, and N. H. Gladfelter of. Medford. For participation in training courses, performance in leader ship of boys and adults, and service in Scouting, training awards were presented by John J. Patton, chairman of the Coun cil Leadership Training com mittee. The Scouter's Key was pre sented to James W. Grigsby Jr., of Medford, and the Scouter's Award was given to Allan P. King, Sam B. Harbison, and Ward L. Lampkin of Medford. The Den Mothers award was presented to Mrs. Shirrel R. Doty of Medford. The Arrow head honor was given td James V. Grigsby Jr., Robert A. Forb Harry W. Barneburg, and N. H. Gladfelter of Medforjj. Recognition was also given to Carl F. Olson of Medford for completing wood badge train ing, and to Fred V. Kitterman of Grants Pass for his appointment a Wood Badge assistant deputy tvnp chief. Arci Students Named To A Cippella Choir TportInd Four.Medford stu '4nta, Richard Arnold, Susan grill, Carol Hussong and Shirley Lynch have been named as mem mer of Lewis and Clark college cappella choir. During the first two weeks in March, the choir will make a .tour starting east through Oregon and southern Idaho and going as far as Salt Lake City, Utah. The return trip will be through Nevada and southern Oregon and home through the Willamette valley. Arnold, tenor, is a sophomore music education major and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Ar nold, 1011 Reddy ave. Miss Lynch, alto, is a senior biology major and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lynch, 139 Ma plecrest ct. Both were members of the college choir last year. Miss Brill and Miss Hussong are two of the 18 new members of the choir. An alto, Miss Brill is a sophomore elementary edu cation major and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Brill, 75 Lozier lane. Miss Hussong, alto, is a freshman music education major and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hussong, 56 South Barneburg rd. RECORD NUMBER Chicago (TP) A record num of students entered medical schools in the 1955-56 academic year, an American Medical as sociation survey showed. The AMA said 7,686 students were enrolled. Seventy-five per cent of this number, or 5,752. had had four years of college education. sented a carved plaque made by William R. Clary, veteran Scout master in Grants Pass. Certificates from the National Council were given to the lead ers of the Council delegation of 63 boys to the fourth National Jamboree held at Valley Forge, Penn., last summer.
