Nine Blue Ribbons Given In Contests By County Chamber In Morning Session The Jackson County Cham ber of Commerce today went on record as endorsing the 1959 Oregon Centennial exposition, and pledged its efforts to assist in making the event a successful one. The chamber's board of direc tors this morning adopted the following resolution: ' WHEREAS the State of Ore gon will observe its 100th anni versary of statehood in the year 1959, AND WHEREAS a Centennial observance is now being plan ned to commemorate this event, AND WHEREAS this Centen nial will provide a rare oppor tunity for Oregon to obtain na tional and international recogni tion for its natural resources and many other advantages, AND WHEREAS such recog nition will react to the econom ic and social well-being of the people of the entire state, AND WHEREAS it is fitting And proper that the people of Oregon and their various organi zations support this effort to the fullest possible extent, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, through its board of directors, heartily endorses the plans for the Oregon Centennial Exposi tion and International Trade Fair, and pledges its own efforts to assist in making the event a successful one. Workmen Accidentally Discover Ancient Tomb Cairo HP Workmen clear ing the western desert of mine fields dating from World War II have accidentally discovered a tomb of the Hellenic era con taining ancient statues and cof fins, it was reported today. The newspaper Al Missa said the workmen were digging be tween the famed Alamein bat tlefield and the village of Eli hamrSan west of Alexandria when they found the tomb in a cavernous pit. Experts said the find was of "the highest archaeo logical importance." Nine first place ribbons were awarded during the YMCA Veterans' Day tournaments held Monday for Medford boys. Tony Eitrem was first in the basketball free-throw contest for boys 12 years old and under after two play-off contests. Win ning the contest for boys 13 through 17 was Mike Morrisey, More than 50 boys participated in this event. Two age groups of pool, ping- pong, checkers and chess were held. Steve Williams won first place ribbons in pool, checkers and ping-pong in the 9 through 12 age group while winners in the 12 through 17 age class were j Jerry Sellect, pool, and Bob Cus- tance for ping-pong, checkers, and chess. The cartoons proved so success ful that YMCA officials have an nounced that they will make this I a permanent part of Saturday programs for Y members. ' Missionary Speech Slated For Church The Rev. Sterling Stewart, missionary to El Salvador, will speak at the First Assembly of God church, 1108 West Main st., Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:45 p.m. Mr. Stewart, who will relate some of his experiences and tell of the progress of missions in El Salvador, will illustrate his talk with a film. During his stay in the San Miguel section, the missionary witnessed the earthquake that killed more than 1,000 persons and left 90,000 persons homeless. Mr. Stewart has aided in the establishing of 100 new churches in El Salvador and the Sunday school of which he is the na tional representative has reach ed an attendance of 10,500.
