Antarctica (IP '"They also serve who only stand and wait." These words of Milton apply in this modern age of air and space to the mother hens of the Navy and Air Force the men who stand by the radio and radar sets at this Operation Deepfreeze headquarters and sweat out the arrival of planes delayed and feared missing over the vast spaces of the Antarctic. It happened recently in a storm that sent wind and snow blowing across the air field here and dropped visibility to one sixteenth to one-quarter of a mile. Inside the shack that held the air operations center the G.I. clock on the wall read 12:45 a.m. Its ticking was drowned out by the buzz of a radio set and the voice of Navy Lt. Robert M. Epperly, of Enumclaw, Wash. Calling Plane Epperly and the preceding air operations duty officer had been calling Air Force 178, a four-engine Globemaster transport, for nearly eight hours without any answer. At 1 a.m.. when the Globe master should have been back, a radioman turned to Navy Lt. Robert L. Boiling of Davisville, R. I., and asked him to prepare a rescue flight. And then it came. . . the week voice of Air Force Capt. Ralph Garrison, Galesburg, 111. The President also can take a shower in flight. So can the reporters by pouring cups of water over each other. Last Thursday night, when the President was preparing for his television and radio speech from his office, Robert Mont gomern was overseeing the tech nical preparations. Montgomery was seen several times to dash out of the Presi dent's office and speed into the TV remote control truck parked outsite the executive wing. At first it seemed that Mont gomery was being unduly care ful in arrangements for the presidential telecast. . But then the truth one of Montgomery's old movies was playing on tele vision that night and the techni cians were watching it in the truck. A THOUGHT: o Might it not be MUCH bet ter for all of us in these ad mittedly confused and critical days if we had more let's-do-its and fewer who-dun-its? Politics is well enough when all is running smoothly, but when the gotg eets rough it's STATESMANSHIP we need. LET S turn now to Mrs. Elean or Roosevelt, a woman who has been much maligned and just as warmly defended and who has come through it all with a great deal of personal re spect on the part of the Ameri can people who are inclined to ; feel that where she has been wrong it has been a matter of the head rather than of the heart. rpHAT is to say . . . Drawing our own conclu sions from her apparently rath er carefully chosen words . . . We'd better not bet our shirts on the pious belief that if Rus sia starts a war the Russian peo ple will rebel against their hard Kremlin masters. Instead . . . She implies . . . We'd better place our depend ence ON OUR OWN EFFORTS. That sounds like good advice. Goy. Col. Myron Page, Walla Walla district engineer, presided at the hearing, one of four being conducted in the Northwest con cerning the proposed Nez Perce dam near the mouth of the Sal mon river. The dam would be 700 feet (-.high, have an initial capacity of 1.500.000 kilowatts, and would cost about 340 million dollars. Backers contend it would pro vide more power and flood con trol than any other proposed de velopment on the river. Sugar Beet Checks Are Mailed to State Growers Nyssa, Ore. Goodwin J. Knight Wednesday night. Newton A. Stearnes, execu tive secretary to the California chief executive, relayed the re ports to Knight in Puerto Rico and said the governor reaf firmed his intention to run for the Senate. "I said in Washington I would run for the U.S. Senate in the June primary," Knight said. "That is still the fact and will remain the fact." The rumors cropped up in full force Wednesday after Republi can National Chairman Meade Alcorn met in a "friendly con ference" with Mayor George Christopher, who is also a GOP candidate for the seat to be va cated by Sen. William Know land R-Calif.). Knight and his wife are in Puerto Rico on a vacation. Press Secretary James C. Haggerty had a reunion in Pu erto Rico recently with big Ed Dudley, former golf pro at the Augusta National Golf Club. Dudley recently left Augusta to become the new pro at a handsome new course outside San Juan. Hagerty came back from a 10 day vacation praising the weath er and the charms of Puerto Rico. It is always possible that Hagerty ?s enthusiasm for Puerto Rico might be so infectious that the President might select it for a winter holiday. There's a well furnished na val base centrally located where the President would be quite comfortable with all sorts- of golf facilities not too distant. Reporters and photographers at Walter Reed Army hospital the other morning did not rea lize until oo late that the object of their news vigilance passed only a few feet behind their backs. They probably wouldn't have recognized him anyway be cause the President was stroll ing down the hall to the X-ray section in a blue bathrobe. OLDEST HOT RODDER Portland, Me.
