More than 1,000 reclamation experts throaghout the nation flocked to hear top federal and state officials discuss land and "va.er problems at the three-day convention. Among the resolu tions adopted before adjourn ment was one supporting opti mum water runoff in any reserv ed area or wilderness that should $e established. Final speakers included Assis tant Interior Secretary Fred Aandahl, who warned that "re sponsible sources forecast an in crease of 60 million people in the U.S. by 1975 ..." and noted that more than 19 million of them would be in the western states. The federal official noted that the answer to the "running ar gument of crop surpluses versus future needs," was "pretty well contained in population fore costs and dwindling crop lands." The model train people al ways have coajed details from the big, real-life railroads, but this time they seem to have gone out on their own for the women's trade. Trains for Ladies In the recent disclosure that talks have been underway look ing toward possible merger of the New York Central and the Pennsylvania railroads, there were estimates that each line was losing around 50 million dollars a year on its passenger service. Well, why not take the plunge and go right after the powerful distaff trade by whip ping up special trains for ladies? "Ladies' Limited! Now leaving on Track 29, for Paoli, Albany, Pittsburgh, and State Street shopping center in Chicago! Please accept our kind request for your presence aboard . . . Pennsy-Central, at home, after 6:14 p.m. standard time." Under the Quigg plan, the La dies Special would consist of several boudoir cars one with chintz drapes outside, another polka dot, another cozily wall papered. Inside, there would be mirrors instead of windows, since the passengers would be much more interested in looking into them than in looking out side. The observation car would have picture mirrors. The exterior architecture of the Pullmans would vary with each. car-ranch house, Georgian, Cape Cod, cottage-small-by-a-waterfall . . . there would be brass knockers and chimes on the doors. Also, a fireplace in every car, attended, naturally, by a fireman or firewoman. Blua Serge Must Go Those simply horrible blue serge suits on conductors would have to go. They could wear Bermuda shorts in summer and something gaudy like matador uniforms in winter. The tickets would be glamorized heart- shaped and possibly in booklet form surrounded by advertise ments, plus a couple of juicy hearthrob stories for berthtime reading. Of course, there would be beauty salon cars, chiropodist cars, a cook-it-yourself diner, a bar car serving only pink lady and Alexander cocktails. The train butchers would hawk hors d'oeuvres instead of ham and cheese sandwiches. When the train wheels whis pered to the rails while crossing trestles, it wouldn't sound as if they were saying the traditional "Heinie Manush . . . Heinie Ma- nush will play today." They'd say "Gussie Moran . . . Gussie Moran . . ." or maybe, "Eliza beth Second reigns supreme." Scientist Praises Defense Department Los Angeles (IP) Dr. JoseDh Kaplan, chairman of the Unit ed States International Geophys ical Year committee, has prais ed a Defense department order for the Army to join the Navv in helping to launch an earth satellite. Kaplan said that he was "very pleased" with Defense Secretary Neil H. McElroy's or der to the services to combine their efforts. "Anything that the Defense Department does to speed progress of our Vanguard project is of course highly plead ing to us," the UCLA professor of physics said.
