CDome people call them corny and maudlin; others
praise their honesty and humanity. Whichever
side you take, the prints produced by the famous
firm of Currier & Ives live as colorful reminders of an
America that is gone forever. This year
. marks both the 100th anniversary of the founding
of the firm and the 50th anniversary of its
dissolution. During its half-century in business,
Currier & Ives lithographed 7,000 subjects, some prints
selling for just a few pennies. They were displayed
in barber shops and hotels, in dingy tenements and
sumptuous drawing rooms. Wherever they hung,
Currier & Ives prints held up a mirror to life in
the latter half of the 19th century. Few things failed
to be portrayed nay, glorified by Nathaniel Currier
But Currier & Ives liked to show the tranquillity of American life.

political ones, religious and sporting, agricultural and
amorous. Most of the subjects were undiluted Ameri
cana, but to remind new citizens of the "old country,"
there were scenes such as the Lakes of Killarney.
Perhaps one of these lithographs lies hidden in your
basement or attic. A prominent Currier & Ives collector,
the late Harry T. Peters, unexpectedly discovered a
copy of "Home to Thanksgiving" in a Newburgh, N. Y.,
harness shop. This is perhaps the most widely known
Currier & Ives print in this country today.
"The prints produced by this partnership have
great historical, romantic, and sentimental values for
our time," Peters declared. "They pass on the
romance of America to future generations."
