) ) oo Workshop Held For Gardeners Medford Garden club met at the courthouse auditorium Thursday for a morning work shop on corsage making. Instruc tors were Mrs. W. H. Dyer, Mrs. G. A. Galbraith and Mrs. Evelyn Tice. Eighteen members attended. During the afternoon business meeting, Mrs. John Mansfield conducted the program "Ideni- fication of Evergreens," and Mrs. Richard - Ostrander, bird chairman, spoke on birds and their feeding habits. She show ed several types of feeders . Guests introduced were Mrs. L. D. Metcalf, Mrs. Claude Coop er, Mrs. Alpha Dupue, Mrs. Jean Cook, and Mrs. W. House. Mrs. C. C. Ferris, new member, was introduced by Mrs. Mattie J. Carson, membership chairman, and was then presented a cor sage. Mrs. T. J. Cook was also reinstated in the club. The club voted to donate a deodar cedar for the juvenile detention home. On display dur ing &e meeting was a holiday arrangement by Mrs. Mansfield and Mrs. Charles Stearns. Also displayed were ribbon corsages made by the instructors of the t morning workshop. t In charge of the social and tea hour were Mrs. C. E. Brad- fish, Mrs. Clare Austin, Mrs C. L. Miller, Mrs. W. Naylor, and Mrs. R. G. Hunter. Mrs. O. H. Brenneman and Mrs. I. D. Fitzgerald poured. The club has planned a Christ mas tour for the December meet ing for members and invited quests. Group to Meet At Rock Museum Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Smith 'ill entertain Roxy Ann Gem nd Mineral club at the Crater Sock Museum on the evening of Wednesday, November 13. Other than the usual business meeting, no specific program is planned in order to leave the members free to enjoy the displays in the museum. The exhibit in the U. S. Camp, Auxiliary To Hold Dinner At Redman Hall Colonel Sargent camp and auxiliary, United Spanish War Veterans, will hold a Thanks giving dinner and meeting in the Redman hall Sunday No vember 17 at 1 p.m. President Bertha Nelson states that election of officers and the usual business meeting will be held. A report on the recent department convention will be given by the delegate, Mrs. Myrtis Morgan. Members are requested to call Mrs. Josephine Widner, dinner chairman, at SPring 2-2225 con cerning arrangements. Families of Spanish War Veterans are in vited to this meeting and din ner and Mrs. Nelson has extend ed a special invitation to mem bers of Rogue River camp and auxiliary of Grants Pass. Meeting Scheduled For Thursday Club Phoenix Phoenix Thursday club will meet at the home of Mrs. Robert Mullin, Wagner Creek road, Thursday, Novem ber 14, at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Ada Stedman will assist. Group Announces Study of Japan "Japan" an interdenomina tional foreign mission study, will be sponsored by Woman's Society of Christian Service of First Methodist church, with the first session being held Tuesday, November 12, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., in the Library room of the church. Mrs. A. S. Feller, Oregon conference secretary of missionary education and serv ice, will be the instructor. Mrs. Feller studied this summer un der Dr. Hamako Hirose, presi dent of the Hiroshima Girls School, Japan. The study book to be used will be "Cross and Crisis in Japan" written by Charles W. Inglehart, and copies are avail able at the church. The filmstrip "From the Church at Nishio" will be shown during the first session. Purpose of the course is to have the students know the peo ple in relation to the political, economic and social problems; to understand Christian missions; and to find ways of advancing the cause of Christ through co operation with the United Church of Japan. Requirements of the course are attendance at all sessions, participation and the reading of the text. There will be no charges. A free nursery will be main tained for pre-school children. Mrs. Feller urges all members of the society to attend and friends from other churches interested in the study are invited to come. Exhibits are being arranged of Japanese articles and art works. Color Specialist Explains Effect of Bluing on Fabrics Chicago OP) Adding bluing to the family wash actually re duces its brightness, but the clothes still appear to be whiter. O. 'Harry Olson, a color spe cialist, said this happens because the bluing agent substracts the light or reduces the reflecting quality of the fabric. The over-all effect then be comes more natural, Olson said. Olson is a physicist at the Ar mour Research Foundation of the Illinois Institute of Technol ogy, Chicago. Cakes Fail? Test kitchens proved that some angel food cake failures are caused by oil or grease on bowls, beaters and pans. Mar garet Spader, home service edi tor of the Gas Appliance Manu facturers association, recom mends a thorough washing of all utensils used in making sponge type cakes. Use very hot water and generous suds for thorough cleansing. It is best to use metal, glass or crockery mixing bowls for these cakes as grease has a tendency to adhere toplastic, she states. Cum mins, 2671 Hillcrest road. Mrs. Justin Smith, interna tional relations chairman, will give a resume of the Asian situ ation and will use a slide film for illustration. The internation al relations study group is one of six study groups sponsored by AAUW here. The other study groups are applied arts, afternoon, arts, afternoon book review, greater decisions and music. All study groups are open to any woman interested in joining, whether or not she is a member of AAUW. Masters Point Play Winners Announced By Duplicate Club Eleven tables of Mitchell movement were played at the Medford Duplicate Bridge club meeting Tuesday during their monthly session of master point play. Mrs. Al Gilhousen and George Rode with lllVfc points were first in the north-south position. Mrs. George Dean and Mrs. Fred Purdin and Mrs. Paul McDuffee and Mrs. E. L. Miller tied for second and third with 106 points each. Fourth place in the north south position went to Mrs. Frank Baker and Al Gilhousen with 100 points. Winning east-west ' were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mitchell, first, 109 points; Mrs. C. L. Recipi ents of the honors were reward ed for work on behalf of the bethel, based on merit points for various projects. Morris Boughner was intro duced by Miss Hubbard in his capacity as associate patron of Reames chapter, Order of Eastern Star. The proposed dance to be held by members of DeMolay, Bethel 55 and Bethel 14, was discussed. Miss Hubbard announced the date for her "go to church" Sun day as November 17 at the St. Mark's Episcopal church. Mem bers were asked to assemble outside the church at 10:45 a.m. Talent Gardeners Tour Greenhouse; Events Announced Talent Several members of Talent Garden club toured the Ashland greenhouse following a meeting of the club Wednesday at the home of Mrs. C. S. Bar rett. The meeting started with dessert luncheon. Mrs. Leon Lockwood volun teered to help decorate ten ta bles for the Dental Society meeting that week and Mrs. Charles O. Long announced the cabaret dinner that would be held by several organizations and clubs in the area early next month. Money from the event would be used to purchase fold ing tables and chairs for the community building. It was re ported that a planning commit tee would meet at the city hall to complete plans. Mrs. H. L. Sommer, Miss Ber tha Hayman and Mrs. E. G. Tay lor were chosen for the com mittee. The Talent club will decorate the chapel at Camp White No vember 23.
