(IP) The two Millbrae couplet0 who cn&sged marriage partners with the agility of square dancers hrve eased into a seemingly nor ma', routine. When Dr. Frank E. Schwartz, 33, and his wife, Betty Jean, 33, decided to get a divorce and re marry with "best friends" J. Martin Brooks, 35, and his wife, Betty, 35, fist April the news shook this San Francisco sub urb. The couples' decision to main tain silence on this subject ap parently has helped keep pub lic comment at a minimum. 'There was a lot of tongue- wagging at the time, but it s disc, down now," a young Mill brae stenographer commented. "But I gues it's hard on the children," she added. Houses Also Swapped Schwartz, an eye specialist in the Millbrae medical center ani Brooks, owner-operator of a San Bruno pet and garden sup ply store swapped houses as well as spouses after their wives obtained Reno divorces la it May 2. The Swart?' four children stayed with their mother as did the two Brooks youngsters. All six children are .under the age of eleven. The two women shared a mo tel room while they established Nevada residence. Schwartz and Brooks left the children witn Dabysitxers when they traveled to Carson City, Nev., to marry their respective second wives. Schwartz, at the time of the "hope to go on living here if public opinion will let us." Friends and neighbors refused to discuss the marriages except to say "we're with them all the way." It was apparent, however, that the couples have decided it too "difficult" to maintain each other's home. Last month the Brookses sold the La Prenda street house which once belong ed to Schwartz and moved to another section of town. The Schwartzes are still liv ing in Brooks' neat, brick-faced house but a large "for sale" sign was conspicuous on the lawn. The wife swap actually may have benefitted Brooks' busin ess, according to one town wag. "At least it didn't hurt it," he said. "He's got a fine store, a good business, and has re-modeled since last May. "And he's just been asked to join one of San Bruno's top ser ice organizations." Both families were courteous in their refusal to comment on the situation as was their pas tor, Rev. R. F. Winkelman of the Millbrae Community Meth odist church. 'I havfe absolutely no com ment on the situation," he said with the air of one who would be relieved to have the entire subject stricken from the rec ord Wkikelman had more to say six months ago when the news liitt bruke. He cautioned h l s church . members from the pul pit then to "let him who has not sinned cast the first stone." Demands Renewed For Credit Easing Washington up Democrats Saturday renewed demands for relaxation of federal restraints on credit to counteract rising un employment now running 400,000 higher than a year ago. Rep. Augustine B. Kelley (D Pa.), a member of the Senate House Economic Committee, told a reporter: "It's high time for the Presi dent to recognize that our eco nomic situation is not favorable. It's high time for adjustments in credit. Tight money i3 squeez ing the housing industry to a halt and hurting automobile sales and small business." The so-called "tight money" policy is under attack from a growing number of Democrats. The policy is under control of the Federal Reserve Board. In theory at least, the board is not directly responsible to President Eisenhower. With de mand exceeding supply, interest rates charged borrowers soared this fall to the highest levels in 25 years. Rep. Henry S. Reuss (D-Wisc), a member of the House Banking Committee, said in a separate interview: "The Eisenhover administra tion seems to be achieving what up to now only the government of France had achieved name ly, galloping inflation and grow ing unemployment at one and the same time." Kelley and Reuss spoke out after the Labor and Commerce departments reported Friday that unemployment in October stood at 2,552,000 compared with 2,100,000 a year earlier. Worst October Since '54 October unemployment actu ally was down 44,000 from Sep tember, but this was less than the normal seasonal drop. As a result, unemployment on a seasonally-adjusted .basis rose in October to 4.6 per cent of the civilian labor force. This com pares with 4.3 per cent in Sep tember and is the highest sea sonally adjusted unemployment rate for any month since Octo ber 1954. The report said non-farm em ployment, which normally in creases in October, dropped 50, 000 from the September figure to an October total of 59.100,000 Nevertheless, this was the high est total on record for any Oc tober. Total employment climbed by 300,000 to 66 million persons in October. But the pick-up was less than usual for this time of year. Moreover, a large part of this boost was due to increased farm employment compared with September when bad wea ther caused a slump in farm work. In a dramatic test performed before a live studio audience, the Westinghouse Laundromat proved once again that it still holds the world's washing championship. Two cups of dirty sand to represent everyday soil were dumped on towels in the Laundromat Automatic Washer and in three other well-known '58 automatic washers. At the end of their washing cycle¬ a grain of sand remained in the Laundromat's towels or in the machine either. Towels in the other washers were streaked with sand and there was also sand left in the machines. What's more, the Laundromat did this cleaner job with gallons less water.
