'IP) William Arthur Johnson, 10, Iilwau kie, was killed Wednesday night when his bicycle was struck by a car. The driver, Jack Wiseman, 20, Clackamas, told police he did not see the bicycle until he was almost upon it. Police said the bicycle had no lights and that it was foggy at the time. cMan Questioned in iecreiary s ueatl JSaton Rogue, La. (IP) Po lice questioned a Chicago man Thursday in conection with the savage slaying of a New Orleans church secretary during an ab duction - robbery last month. Off icers identified the suspect as Joseph Edward Liutikas, 37, and said they found two auto matic pistols and three large knives in his car. One of the knives bore bloodstains. Liutikas first denied, then la ter admitted, that he was in New Orleans on the night of Oct. 23, when the Rev. Martin W. Holls, 69, and his secretary, Miss Maud Lind, 57, were taken on a two hour ride of terror, investigators said. The suspect also fits a descrip tion of the bandit given by the minister. Liutikas was given a lie detector test and the result was expected today. The attacker held a gun on the. minister and Miss Lind as th left a church meeting and forced the Rev. Mr. Holls to drive around for more than an hour. Then he beat both with a pistol and slashed them with a sharp instrument. Miss Lind died of strangula tion from a handkerchief shov ed down her throat, according to a coroner's report, but would have died anyway from a sever ed juglar vein. The minister was seriously in jured but has since recovered and been released from the hos pital. Q Metallurgical Tests to Continue At III inois Vaflev Nickel Mine Cave Junction While the work of ascertaining about how giany tons of nickel ore and of what grade is in its final stages in the Illinois Valley, metallurgi cal tests w.ill continue all winter, Lionel Simard, consulting engi neer for Nickel Corporation of America, said. On the findings of these tests, to be conducted in Canada and probably New Orleans, will hinge the future of nickel mining in this locality. "We must find out if materials here can be made to pay," Sim ard said this week, in describing various leaching processes under consideration for this type of ore. He painted an optimistic pic ture when he compared valley deposits to those in Cuba. Saying local ore is very sim ilar to Cuban deposits, he told of two plants already in operation there. One, using an ammonia leach process, has proved profit able, but newer acid leach is believed to be more successful i at the Freeport Sulphur plant on Moa Bay property. Ore here is partly treated in Cuba, then shipped to New Orleans for final processing. Acid Leach Procesi The acid leach process is the one which will probably be used for Illinois Valley ore, if metal lurgical tests give the green light to large scale mining here, he said. Simard indicated a chemical plant might be built here, so that acid can be made on the site. This would be only a small part of the nickel extracting opera tion in this area, should ore prove up in metallurgical tests. The Toronto consultant also stated Edward N. White, presi dent of Nickel Corporation of America, is finalizing arrange ments to ship samples to the Freeport Sulphur plant in New Orleans for testing. A request has already been made to Gen eral Services administration for use of the government-owned Portland (IP) A robber held up the Portland Trust bank in the downtown section of the city Thursday and escaped with an estimated $1200, police reported. Smith, a well known metallurgist, has joined the Tor onto firm of Simard and Knight as an associate consultant. Ac cording to Simard, he is to direct the testing processes for Illinois Valley ore this winter. Open Pit Work Open pit work on Eight Dol lar mountain is nearly com pleted, and only a few more ex plorations are scheduled for Woodcock mountain. The amount and grade of ore has been an nounced as adequate for further tests. Simard, who has been in the valley since late October on a survey of operations, will leave early next week for Canada. While here he also made a pre liminary exploration of nickel mine claims in the High Plateau region in back of Gasquet moun tain across the California state line. He was assisted in this work by Murphy Hicks of the valley, who has mining property in this area. The California exploration has no connection with Illinois Val ley work, although the consult ing firm of Simard and Knight has been retained in both in stances. Exploration is similar to that first done on Woodcock and Eight Dollar mountains, and will determine . the advisability of going into a more extensive plan of drilling and taking ore sam ples. It is believed ore here is much the same as that in the valley. Hearing Scheduled on Trailways Bus Rates A hearing has been scheduled at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Salem on a proposal to change rates for bus service by Continental Pacific Trailways. Rates would be changed to in clude Albany and Ashland. Fares proposed from Ashland are 50 cents to Medford and Grants pass; 95 cents to Roseburg; $1.45 to Eugene, $1.65 to Albany, $1.70 to Salem, and $1.95 to Portland. The special charges are at present effective on one sched ule, and under the proposed would be made effective on all schedules, according to Public Utilities Commissioner Howard Morgan.
