The letters were at the northwest corner Sooners Out To Nail Spot in Orange Bowl By UNITED PRESS The University of Oklahoma, battle-scarred i& its last two foot ball games but still boasting a 4i-game winning streak, tries to nail down an Orange Bowl berth Saturday against up-and-coming Missouri. Q Oklahoma is an 18-point favor ite despite Missouri's over all record and 3-0 in Big Eight play. Missouri has lost only to Texas A&M, which displaced Oklahoma this week as the na tion's No. 1 team in the United Press ratings. Since Bud Wilkin son became Oklahoma coach in 1947, the Sooners have played 63 conference games without a loss. The other Orange Bowl team is sure to be Duke, unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference but a six-point underdog this week to Navy. Bowl Possibilitiei Other possible howl lineups: Rose: Oregon vs. Ohio State or Michigan State. Oregon, 5-0 in the Pacific Coast conference, is favored by 12 points over Wash ington. The most attractive Cotton Bowl paring would be Texas A&M Navy. - Sugar and Gator: The same teams in the running for the Cot ton Bowl are possibilities here, too, except that Navy won't play in the Sugar Bowl because of Louisiana segregation laws. Rumors that a fire had been set in a grandstand at Grants Pass were quashed this morning. GP was also painted on the back of the Hedrick Junior High school building. Hedrick and Grants Pass eighth grades play Saturday. Possibility that the jobs were "local" seemed strong. Bold Ruler Early Entry Camden, N.J. (TP! Trainer Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, the "grand old man of racing," beat his rivals to the entry box by naming Bold Ruler as a starter in the $75,000 added Trenton Handicap 24 hours ahead of time. Now 83 years old, "Mr. Fitz," as he is known to the racing fra ternity, entered Bold Ruler in the "Dream Race" Thursday while some trainers still were debating whether to take a crack at the rich purse. The Trenton shapes up as a three-horse race involving Bold Ruier, Round Table and Gallant Man but with Dedicate's defec tion, fourth place money became "loose." Dedicate pulled up lame following a workout Wednesday and was withdrawn. Sam Tufano's Wise Margin, a seasoned handicap campaigner from New England, and Hoop Band, owned by Mrs. Ada L. Rice of Chicago, may also join the Trenton field, if only to pick up that fourth place money. SPORTS NCAA Group To Clarify j Regulations Kansas City, Mo. OP! Walt Byers, executive secretary of the National Collegiate Athletic as sociation, said today a commit tee will be created to clarify NCAA rules on aid to prep stu dents. Byers made the announce ment after officials at Annapolis admitted they might be breaking current NCAA rules by allowing prep students to receive aid from Navy alumni. Committee members for the new group, set up at the NCAA council meeting in October, have not yet been named. Naval academy officials have appeared before the NCAA coun cil to discuss the problem, Byers said, but "it is not a case of the NCAA council attempting to find a solution for only one member instituiton." At Annapolis, Rear Admiral William R. Smedley, Academy superintendent, said the Acad emy was attempting to work out its differences with the NCAA. Involves Prep Students Commander Marcy Dupre said the question involved prep, stu dents at such institutions as Bul lis Preparatory near Annapolis. About 90 per cent of the Navy's students, he said, were graduates of schools such as Bul lis or the Navy's School for En listed Men from the fleet at Bainbridge, Md. Some prospective athletes at Bullis received aid from the Na val Academy Alumni associa tion, Dupre said. However, un der the Academy's understand ing of the rules, he said, an in dividual can grant aid to a stu dent but it is not clear whether a group, such as the alumni as sociation, can do so.
