The Medical Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation w r r as- 1 Dr Alvarei The Disappearance of Migraine During Pregnancy Women want to know why their previously-severe migraines quit entirely during their preg nancy. Actual ly, no one knows. One can suspect that the change was due to some change the glandular h o r m ones of the body, per haps cortisone. The improve ment in cases of migraine may be similar to that which we see sometimes in cases of a stomach ulcer or rheumatoid arthritis or asthma or some chronic skin disease when the woman gets pregnant. What has puzzled me and made me feel that all the available explanations for the relief of migraine by pregnancy are of little value is the fact that some women with a severe migraine tell me they were com pletely relieved during one pregnancy and left unhelped or made worse during another preg nancy. For a while I questioned such women to see if it made any difference if the child was a boy or girl, but this apparently wasn't the answer. Curiously, people with free- quent migraines are often cured for six months or so when they get jaundiced. What interested me much was to find a migrain ous person who lost her head aches completely for several weeks before the jaundice ap peared. This showed that the improvement was due to changes in the liver and not to bile in the blood. Since early days, many people have blamed their migrainous headaches on disease of the liver, but once I asked Dr. Carl Morlock to investigate this at the Mayo Clinic, and he found that not only were people with definite disease of the liver, largely inmmune to migraine but often they lost their head aches the day their liver went bad. Mutfnik Cocktail Mede by Bartender Longview (IP) The muttnik cocktail is orbiting around the Gold Room of the Monticello ho tel here these days. Bill Norton, head bartender, concocted it from the follow ing formula: A jigger of vodka. Half an ounce of tequila. A dash of vermouth with an atomic type atomizer. Shake well, pour into a cham pagne glass and decorate with a cherry properly toothpicked to represent a satellite. Norton says the power of the drink will swing the cherry sat ellite around the glass. You can go as high as you want on the muttnik at 90 cents a crack. Gaillard Approved As Premier of France Paris OP) The French Na tional assembly approved finan cial expert Felix Gaillard as premier Wednesday, ending a five-week crisis that brought France to the brink of chaos. Apparently, then, the jaundice produced by a tran quilizer is different from one produced by a hepatitis (inflam mation of the ' liver) or by ob structing gallstone. Many persons think that they can get rid of their headaches by parting with some gallstones, but in my experience, in perhaps 99 per cent of cases, the head aches go on just the same after the removal of the gallbladder.
